I would check out gums, esp the folds around the mouth. That in some dogs is a cause of really bad breath, so bad you can smell them when they're in another room ! Dead skin, saliva, and bits of food get trapped there and the moist environment is a breeding ground for bacteria. It is called something but I can't remember what, and some dogs are born with excess folds which creates the problem.

I too would be inclined to take him to the vets if it's bad and more than 'doggy breath'.

our border terrier had minging breath-i'm not joking-like dead fish heads.
he now lives with the eldest daughter and the smell has almost gone!
she feeds him the same food and does everything more or less the same apart from i fed him morn and night and she leaves his biscuits down all day and he grazes?
the vet checked his teeth and they were fine so we are totally baffled but thats the only difference that we can think of?

Hi just caught up with this thread. I'm actually doing a final year dissertation on canine dental products and their effectiveness. There is a product out called vet aquadent anti plaque solution for cats and dogs. You add it to their water bowl for bad breath and fighting plaque. It's had some good reviews and you can buy it on the net for £5-6 xx

Angie has a spectacular aura about
This gets a bit confusing for me......The Vet Aquadent got me quite interested, but then I see that it contains Xylitol. Surely the Xylitol would be at a safe level if it's being injested??????
