When my children were small we had 2 Cairn Terriers, they were loved by everyone and were the sweetest of dogs, BUT never once did I leave the children alone with the dogs. I would trust my life with my dogs, then and now, but not with the lives of small babies and children; as has been said you just don't know what the children get up to nor what the reaction of the dog would be. I have watched my 9 year grandson in the garden with Ailsa who is a very submissive and motherly type dog - he didn't know I was there - and as much as he loves dogs, he started teasing her and getting a little irritated and bored with her over a ball tug, children can be spiteful and dogs don't always understand- I'm sure he wouldn't have rough-housed or pushed her but who knows? then maybe the game would have got rougher etc. etc. and one thing leads to another.... so far better to always supervise I think....
