Dog Trainer fined after yanking pup causing injury
This trainer is from the Warrington area.
Dog trainer is fined for yanking puppy by throat (From Warrington Guardian)
Just thought people should be aware of him.
Remember when you take your dog to a trainer or a class, that you are the one paying the bill, you have total charge of your dog and retain the right to say 'no' to anything you don't like.
Don't be afraid to refuse to let the trainer take your dog off you. If you disagree with the type of equipment used then don't use it - leave the class if you have to.
Better to make a bit of a scene than have your dog physically injured or even worse mentally injured.

Omg how distressing for both the pup and the owners....I hope this doesn't have any adverse effects for this poor pup.

Good god!
I encourage folk to take a look at my classes without their dogs prior to signing up, I would much prefer they iron out any worries and issues before coming in to the full course!
Somehow a fine doesn't seem strong enough....

This makes me so mad. I think i may send the article to the man who put one on Sophie. It will give him the answer to the question why I don't like them, though i get the feeling he's not really bother about the answer!
Sue, You are right and I wish I had done that!

Thats awful.......why was he lifting the pups front paws off the ground anyway.
If anyone did that to my munchkin, I'd have had him by the throat!
I hope the pup and its owners are OK now and it hasn't set them too far back.

It seems to me and I could be wrong anyone can open up a class, and call themselves a dog trainer I went to one a while ago with my pup that I sadly lost, it was run by a young girl (17ish) who had only done her bronze good citizen award I was amazed by the amount of people there and to be honest she was out of her depth fine with puppys, but with older dogs with problems she stood no chance needless to say I walked away .

Omg really Colleen?? That's terrible that she could be allowed to get away with that. What qualifcations should you expect your trainer to have??

This is a real bugbear of mine, the fact the JP can set up and run classes willy nilly! We have many such establishments here and it's truly disgusting! Another trainer friend of mine is actively attempting to 'bring them down', but she's truly fighting a losing battle, there is nothing the law can do unless there is a real crime being committed!
If I cannot accommodate anyone due to being full I will pass them on to the Association of Pet Dog Trainers website. When I started out a few years ago I volunteered first, got some real hands on experience with a behaviourist/trainer, who has since become a real friend and still offers invaluable advice to me, she is both a member of APDT and a COAPE behaviourist. The latter is where I pass on those that are past my expertise, though I am a strong believer in having as much knowledge as possible, and being a part of the APDT means you have to be actively seeking to improve and keep things 'fresh'! We are also subject to 'check ups' to ensure we are conforming.
I am also a fully accepted member of the smaller known organisation ADTB (Academy of Dog Training and Behaviour), their ethics aren't as strong as APDT, but the support network that you receive from some good sources is also invaluable.
I would run away screaming from classes that take in more than 8-10 dogs, you cannot learn in this environment and it just isn't practical!
As it has been said before on other threads, if you have the chance to go along to a class without your dog, do so, get a feel for the person you are paying to help you train and the environment. Look for relaxed dogs and never be afraid to ask for experience/qualifications etc!!
Lastly, if you feel that a class has not been up to scratch, ask the trainer where they gained their skills, if they belong to any 'bodies', report them!!! Those organisations with good codes of conduct will deal with it correctly!
Gawd, sorry, i've only gone and waffled again...sorry, sorry, sorry
Jo

No don't apologise Jo, we need to know this sort of information and I can well imagine how angry it must make you to hear of inexperienced people "training" dogs and potentially doing more harm than good.
