Recession & dog food
I thought I would post this thread as I wondered if anyone else is feeling the pinch penny wise and what, if any, decisions where being taken to cut back on home budget's that would affect your GSD's food?
We have had to economise in the present climate and unfortunately Clay's food has had to suffer. At the moment we are feeding him on a well known brand complete food, reduced to include a small amount of tin. This is partly because after a few years of bloody research with him he does seem to prefer some meat as opposed to all dry but I'm not overly happy about the diet that he is receiving.
Is anyone else facing this dilemma with household budget vs nutritional dog food or is it just me?
Thoughts, comments and advice please

Well I feed my GSD raw and it works out at under £5 per week. Now I've another one the bill will go up though they're worth it

With 1 gsd and 4 jrt, it costs roughly £7.50 a week to feed them all. It was nearly £12 before I switched them all to raw. The terriers eat virtually nothing, and Ozzie isn't a greedy dog, but raw I have found is much cheaper! Not for everyone though, depends on where you can get you meat from.

To be honest, I dont know what I pay per week,.. because I feed raw, and much of my food comes in as carcuses its hard to calulate,.. but I know for sure that it is a lot less than commercial food would have cost me

Zeph is on Arden Grange and it wasn't really that long ago that we changed him from a cheaper food to AG. But if/when a second dog comes along, it's going to be quite costly, so the raw diet is seeming more appealing, but I just don't think I should go there lol!

I have a Bull Terrier (huge appetite) and a GSD (medium appetite) & both are fed raw. I spend approx. £9 per week on both. I feed bones which I get at the local Morrissons supermarket & carcasses, mainly rabbit which I get from a local farmer, plus some tripe & liver/hearts.

Well, Maisie has S.I.B.O. so her food cost has gone up, cos she has a low residue diet now, along with the cost of antibiotics and now she has probiotics.
What have we cut down on? Our weekly treat of aberdeen angus sirloin steak, but hey, she is worth it

I have to say, that we haven't changed what we feed the dogs at all.
For our two, it costs us approximately £26 for 2 months to feed them on raw, which is a bargain for the quality If we fed kibble, we wouldn't be able to afford the two mutleys

Seriously... how does everyone feed their dogs at such a low cost!!! I guess it depends what sources you have.
