Food amounts

Hi, Kenzi is now 6 months. She is still on RC Maxi Junior and it suits her well, she loves it. The vet told us to up her food 5 weeks ago which we did and she has filled out nicely now. She is still on 3 meals a day (did try cutting down lunch meal a bit and giving extra at the other two meals but this made her poos huge! and more often). The question is should we cut her back on the amounts now that she has filled out and is it ok to leave her on 3 meals a day, she so enjoys her meals, I feel she would be miserable on 2 meals (or am I being a fussy Mum?). She gets her last meal at 6 pm.

My youngest was on 3 meals a day until she was a year old 'cause she was quite lean and it was a good way of keeping weight on her.

I used to take her to work with me and could feed her there so wasn't an problem for me. Mine all get fed twice a day now but if you want to feed her 3 times daily, and it suits your dog, then why not?

If you have had an problem with her weight then I probably wouldn't reduce the amount as she is still growing but if she gets to be a bit of a 'lardy arse' then reduce it slightly

I can't see any problem with that. Dempsey had 3 meals a day till he was nearly a year old, and still has 2 meals a day. It's whatever suits your dog, really.

Echo is just over 6 months and we cut down to 2 meals as I read somewhere that it is about the right time. From the stuff I have read it should be 2 meals a day for life

I would read the info on your dog food, we feed Echo Arden grange and there are full insturctions on amounts based on age and weight. We have followed those instructions and Echo seems to be perfect size wise.

I would imagine every food has different content and therefore slightly different amounts might be warranted

Hi hermykne,
As Kenzi is rather lean and the vet said she was a bit thin we upped her food over 6 weeks ago. She is now 6 months and still having 3 meals a day, in total 550 gms. She has had a poorly tum and is only just back on her RC.

They are all so very different in size/weight, feel pups ribs, see if they can easily be felt, and try not to get to hung up on weight, my 3 have all been so different, the two big lads were big pups, whereas Rayden was always very lean until late, now he looks alot better xxx
