Adding Gravy to dry food?

I'm not sure if this is the right thing to be doing or how it is going to affect my dogs stomach but has anybody ever tried adding normal gravy to dry food to make it more appealing? My dog is not eating as much as he usually does and I'm starting to think he is getting bored of the usual dry food, so I started adding about half a cup of gravy to mix in with the food to give it a nice smell and he is munching it all up within 5 mins. He loves it!

I am aware you can buy gravy for dogs but I had a look in Pets At Home and it seems a bit expensive for what it is.

Thanks.

Wont hurt occasionally but I believe that gravy has quite a high salt content so probably isnt good for daily use

Im no expert though so maybe someone else will have better insight

I was thinking of the salt content too. The PAH stuff is expensive for what it is.

Mine have dry food + I mix half of one of the little foil trays with their biscuit for each of them, it doesn't hang about long

I think you're right, just needs a bit of flavour. What about making a kind of gravy from the herbs that Pam + Anni were talking about on the raw feeders thread earlier today?

You could add a bit of boiling water to dry food and let it soak up for a few minutes before feeding (let it cool a bit before you put it down).

That way it makes it more appetising as it gives off a nice smell, plus it adds a bit more water to the food before the dog eats it and can help to prevent bloat.

Gravy has stuff (chicken/beef) sasha cant have so we mix in half carton on wainrights turkey & rice food to make the biscuits more interesting (always works) but for a change we sometimes put couple of raw eggs over the biscuits or a small tin of tuna, buy them when on offer at supermarkets as they work out very cheap

That's a really good point because a lot of dried food expands in their tummies. You only have to see a bit of kibble that's strayed into the water bowl to see how it puffs up; some brands more than others.

As you're feeding cooked meat why not add a tin of sardines in to make the dried more appetising. Most dogs love that.

Great, thanks for the help. I'll have a look at the gravy recipe and I'm going to try him with a raw egg tonight to see how it goes

i agree ,my two just find dry food a bit samey all the time,so its either tinned sardines, tuna,(and its good for them)or i make a gravey out of liver, water.and some frozen veg, cook it and then blitz it.and put it over the dinner.they cant get enough of mammys cooking.(it could be any meat thats on cheap at the supermarket.)and no salt.

I add a quarter tin of wet food to Clays dried and he gobbles it up. I'm sure there are many on here who don't agree with it but it appears to be less harm weight wise (and he is a very heavy lad on a diet, 57 kilos) than the tuna that I was using to wet his food for him. I would use gravy but Clay, after years of trial and error with various foods, is a meat & dry food dog.
