For raw feeders...

I started raw feeding last week on one of the dogs feed. Dry in morning, raw at night.

Had boys at vets yesterday for boosters and Spyke was staying longer for castration. The vet was concerned about Braedens weight ( Spyke was having surgery at this point) although he didn`t weigh him. Obviously going on appearance. When I mentioned raw he shook his head like I was a naughty gal

The thread isn`t really about what I said to him and him to me just, how do your vets view you feeding your dogs raw?

Heather has a spectacular aura about
2 years ago when I started feeding Kira raw I mentioned it to the 'vet in training' at our surgery and she was horrified.
My vet knows I feed raw but we don't discuss it much- he did say to me at the beginning that you can't compare what dogs would eat in the wild with the meat I'm giving Kira as farmed meat has so many hormones etc in it now, but I still think it's better for her than dry, and it's supermarket bought so it's the same meat I feed my family.

Thanks Heather. I`m not going to change their diet as I tried upping the dry only to get more poo and two very lively dogs still not gaining weight. I did explain they are still young boys who get heaps of exercise.

I always got comments on how skinny Kira was- i just said I had to keep her lean to avoid straining her joints ( which was true but i think she's just naturally like that- and she does get lots of exercise)

Just a question- why do you want to get more poo?

Mine are great with it. One feeds hers raw anyway. The newest vet wasn't very clued up on it but is open minded and we've had discussions about what I feed them. She calls it a Home Diet, which I think is nice! Says both are very fit on it.

Seeing your post has reminded me about campylobacter, so will start a thread rather than hijack yours

Anni I think I`ll pinch that saying and call it a home diet too

Spyke has always been lean, I don`t think he`ll ever fatten out but my concern is he doesn`t have reserve for any illnesses After fasting for his op and not having much to eat since I can see his ribs even more. He loses weight so fast and is very slow to put any IF any back on again.

We got told Blitz was putting on weight too quickly, (he put 1.9kg in 2 weeks) when asked what we fed him we explained half raw half dry and we will wean onto full raw by the end of the bag of dry. Although the vet seemed a little off about his weight gain she told us how fab a full raw diet would be for him.

My vet nearly had a seizure when I told him I was feed Ozzie raw! He then went on to tell me how raw feeding was bad for them, and I was going to end up with a hyper dog as I was giving him far too much protein blah blah blah!!!

Next visit, when he asked what I was feeding, I lied and said dry (couldn't be doing with the lecture!!) and he was saying what good condition Ozzie was in and to keep up what I was doing as he seemed really fit and healthy!!!
