Orijen kibble? Struggling a bit now.

Hiya again,

Im struggling with lexis food again, she's so fussy and seems so sensitive to new things. She was on royal canin maxi junior when we got her and i kept her on it, she wolfed it down for a couple of weeks but then all of a sudden wouldnt entertain it. Half of me blames my OH for feeding her some cooked mince as a treat, maybe she thought do you really think im going to eat these biscuits after ive just tasted that mince.

Anyway, after pulling our hair out and figuring out if she was ill or just being picky we came to the conclusion that she was just being fussy and i did stick it out for a while thinking she will eat it soon. But i gave in, went to asda and bought some wagg puppy food. She wolfed it down and was eating that for about 3 weeks, occasionally i tried her with a few royal canin biscuits to see if she would eat them but no chance. Anyway, she stopped eating her wagg food then, she just wasn't interested, and whilst at puppy classes in the shop there they sold a 'dog gravy topper' for mixing with kibble so i tried it and she loved it, for about a week. Today i put her her morning food down and she looked at it then walked off. I left it down for ages this time and after a few hours it had gone. But that was only 1/3 of her daily amount, im not going to be able to get her to eat the rest of todays as shes not interested enough.

So ive been reading all over the internet etc, raw diet, puppy food ingredients and other peoples experiences with GSD pups eating habits. And i was a little bit relieved when i found i wasn't the only one with a fussy pup fearing shes not eating enough. Seems there is quite a few people who have had the same, and after trying a few different brands, they found 'the one'. Im desprately hoping that i will have the same experience and try a new food and she just seems to both love it, and thrive on it. I know royal canin is a good food and ive got 3/4 of a £46 bag left, but maybe she just doesn't like it too much. Anyway, one food that has really stood out to me is 'Orijen', never even heard of it until today but the ingredients look really good and peoples reviews of it seemed excellent. Has anybody had any experience with it? I can only seem to find it for sale through online order, even pets at home dont have it, but if i have to buy it online and its great then im prepared to. The one 2nd to this was IAMS puppy food, it also had good reviews but im really drawn to this orijen and have a good feeling about it.

Thanks.
Please dont think im a *** for trying these different foods, as i know some people say 'just leave it down she will eat it if she is hungry'. I really dont want that to be the case i want her to enjoy her food if possible.

Have read up on raw but dont really want to go down that road as of yet, maybe ill consider it one day in the future.

Sorry just wanted to add that she is 6 months old and is currently losing teeth. I thought this was the problem at first but now im convinced she is just being fussy. A dog trainer told me that most puppys dont even notice teething, dont know how much truth is in that.

Mike, you remember the same problems I've had with Tilly - food allergies etc, at my wits end etc, well Orijen is the best find in the world, thanks to Lynn (xxxx for Lynn)

All the symptoms have now gone, + their bowls are always licked so clean you have to think sometimes have they been fed ???

It's fantastic stuff, I'll PM you x

Mike, have you tried mixing a tin of sardines in with the royal canin? Or pre-soaking the kibble in some stock to tempt her?

Is Lexi on 3 meals a day? Was going to suggest doing a mixed feed.. raw in am and Orijen or kibble in pm? Some members mix the 2 well enough, as long as you allow sufficient time for the kibble to digest as it takes longer.

The thing I found when Zee was on Orijen was she did a lot of massive poos - we're talking 4-6 huge ones a day I know it's meant to be good dried food, but there must be a lot of filler in it to produce that much waste.

When i switched her to raw she put muscle on, poo'd less and smelt less 'doggy'. She was 8 months when I changed to raw. Haven't looked back - both are doing well on it.

Hey bud,

I have had exactly the same problem with Zak, I tried him on quiet a few dry foods, he snifs the bowl gives me puppy eyes and lowers his head walking off bless him. I gave a full bag of Orijen to the neighbour last week.

Orijen is the best dry food you can get full stop. There is no other food that comes close have a look at this website, it speaks for its self. It's more expensive than other foods but you get what you pay for. It's one of the few NO GRAIN 6 star foods for dogs. Becarefull tho as it's very high in protein and can give puppies the runs.

If you have a Kennel gate near you they have just started to stock it, if they dont have it in they will order it for you monthly, you dont have to pay in advance.

I have given up on Dry with Zak, I tried him on Raw last week as a few recomended it (thanks to Lynn and Tracey and a few others) and he crys for me to put the bowl down. There is such a variety you can feed so should keep him happy for a while.

Zak now loves his Raw and I have 60 packs of allsorted 1lb bags coming on tuesday :P

Hi thanks for taking the time to read all that and reply.

Seems like orijen IS a good food, but just depends on whether the particular dog takes to it. Im going to order one of the small bags and see what she thinks of it.

I have tried soaking the royal canin, and adding sardines, the first time the sardines were mixed in she wolfed it down, but after 3 days or so turned her nose up at it. But she would quite happily eat them on there own.

Every time someone talks about raw it sounds like there dog is thriving on it, im going to do some more research on it. It just worries me i suppose about not doing it 100% correctly and she ends up lacking some particular things.

Will let you know how we get on thanks alot!!

Great news with tilly tracey i bet you are so chuffed. I hope to be in your boat very soon lol thanks

Hey Anni
I can only say with mine it produces good firm non smelly poo's about 1-2 a day max There's no filler either otherwise I wouldnt feed/sell it
