Diva's not eating!

Hi All!

Diva's now 10 months old and until recently was still on 3 meals a day (as it suited both us and her) - ProPlan Puppy Large breed Athletic, a total of 540g a day; we also added either tripe/ fish/ egg,..to one of her portions and she used to wolf it all down. However lately she has turned her nose up at breakfast and only ate half of her lunch. Her daily routine including exercise hasnt changed so wonder whats going on. She hasnt lost weight, doesnt look either too fat or too skinny, and is still the same active doggie so am not worried but would welcome any suggestions on what to do to make her eat more? Or is she just telling us we feed her too much? Should we change her dry kibble diet to something more appetizing? Cheers

It's natural for them to lose interest in brekkie at some stage, if the food suits her I wouldn't change it as you may give something else that doesn't suit.

I'd reduce her meals to 2 a day + see how you go on

Hi,

At 10 months I would be feeding 2 times a day for life.

I agree with the advice you have already been given and would drop her meals down to two a day, morning and evening. Try not to pander to her by adding extra tasty bits etc, or she will just become over fussy. Are you giving her sufficient time to eat her food and then picking it up? It not, try picking her dish up after, say, ten minutes if she hasn't eaten it and then not giving her anything else until her next meal.

Thanks for all your advice, very much appreciated. We took Diva for a long walk last night and thought she may be hungry afterwards as she had only had half of her lunch, but she wouldnt touch her food! This morning she only had half of it again. We'll see how it goes for the next few days and if she starts losing weight, will take her to the vets.

To answer you question Kirsty: We usually put the bowl down and leave it there for about 10mn, if she hasnt eaten, well she can wait for the next meal.

Just a quick comment. I would advise you not to feed for at least an hour (preferably longer) after a walk as it could lead to bloat, and possibly torsion, which is often fatal.

Hi,

I would also reduce to 2 meals a day. It may be that now she has finished the bulk of her growing, that she just needs less food. If, after reducing to 2 meals a day, she is not finishing her food completely, reduce it slightly and see how she goes. She is probably just telling you that she doesnt need as much.

Agreed. I also don't feed within an hour before a walk
