Bones and other occupying treats!
Hey guys!
Hope everyone is well. I have another basic question for you I'm afraid!
Basically it's about bones.
Which bones are safe to eat cooked? Obviously I know chicken is a no no but can he have beef and pork bones cooked?
Also is there a problem with the frequency? I bought him a cooked beef bone from pets at home, he has had it for days and I've just been giving him it when I'm out or when it's quiet like now and Honey is out.
I am asking because I am back full time now, luckily because our hours he has someone at home Friday afternoons, all Saturday, all Sunday all Monday and Tuesday mornings but Wednesday and Thursday will drag for him, especially when Emma and Honey go at the end of the month. My Plan is to get someone to pop in wed and Thur lunch time to give him his lunch let him out for a wee, check he has water etc but I can imagine it won't be fun anyway.
So I'm hoping that we can just give him a bone or pigs cheek/ears to keep him occupied.
He eats a raw diet, should I cut down on things like turkey wings in his meals due to the amount of bone in the day, should I add more liver or something to stop him from getting blocked up?
How do you occupy your dog while your out for a long time, on wed and Thur it'll be 10 hours he is on his own and I'm worried.
Thanks in advance!
Lucy x

Chicken is great,... in fact all bones are good, but they all have to be raw,..if you give cooked bones,...especialy chicken, then the bones tend to go brittle and you run the risk of the bones getting stuck in the throat,.. but while they are raw, they are flexible.
The reason you can buy cooked bones, is because they are the large weight bearing bones, these will not splinter anyway, although some people dont like them because dogs have been known to chip their teeth on them.
Dog will not get blocked up on a raw diet providing there is variety, so...any sort of meat, offal, fish is very important too
When it comes to raw, give as much varitety as you possible can,.. dont give up on bones if you are giving other things,.. watch the poo, if it is quiet white, then you have too much bone in the diet, if not then you are ok

Thanks for your reply Where do you get raw ones Stuart? A turkey wing isn't a challenge for him anymore, they used to tire him out he just chomps them up in no time. I want something that'll last him a while! X

I am probably luckier than most people in that I get complet deer direct from the hills,... but I also get a lot of food from the like of the suppermarket, chicken, turkey, ham hocks, and the like,... do you have a slaughter house around you that might help out, or a friendly butcher, although not many of those give dog meat/bones any more
As for a bone that will last, you are probably best with the ones you buy,...unless that friendly buitcher can help with a beef bone

Just to let you know Lucy, Otto had a roast beef knuckle bone from PAH recently (it was bought for his birthday but he couldn't have it then with being ill) and it gave him a bad bum
Otto is a big and quick chewer but we have found that stag bars and deer shanks from Aunty Linda last for ages

Only thing I have found, too much raw "long lasting" bones, shins, thighs of cows etc, gives them the runs! I think the marrow in them is too rich! As a boredom buster, I will give the roast knuckle bones, but Ozzie does tend to just nibble at these instead of trying to break big bits off, so I know he is fine with them! Might be worth trying a few (raw and roast) before leaving him with them so you can keep an eye on him and make sure they don't give him a runny bum!
Other thing you could try, one I am going to try out myself soon, is one of those stag bars! They are supposed to be long lasting without I'll effects!
