Rabbit on the way

I've got a rabbit arriving soon tonight, freshly killed earlier today..

What's the best way to cook it for the dogs, boil or bake?

Don't fancy giving it raw to them just yet

If you are going to cook it I would boil and strip the meat from the bones but you could save yourself the trouble and feed raw with bones etc, a word of advice under no circumstances post a picture of the rabbit carcass this forum has some very sensitive members who can be very abusive about such matters

Post your pics if you have them and want to Hun.... What I would advise is that if/when you do just put a little courtesy warning in your title so that those who don't want to be grossed out will know beforehand and not be shocked at what they do see if they open the thread to something other than what is described

Hope the bubbas enjoy their treat

yyeeaaahhhhh, i would look at a thread saying 'rabbit coming soon' and expect a nice fluffy bunny....

As far as advice goes though, i think i would boil it to unless you were going to toss it to them raw... i bet they would eat it, you know

Yes, boil it, but don't give the bones. If you want to give the bones, then give them raw!

Personaly if the dogs will take it I would give it raw, just as you get it it will do them far more good,.... thats how my dogs would eat it.

...but having said that not all dogs seem to know what to do with animals that still have a jacket on, it this is the case I would butcher it yourself if you can, i.e. strip the meat off and give raw

...any sort of cooking will reduce the goodness value,... you already know that you dont give cooked bone ever,..[ for others new to this who may be reading ]

Not arrived yet...

A couple more questions...

The last lot I didn't get, because when Janson tried gutting them he went throught he intestine/stomch with the knife, so throw them out has he was concerned about the meat being contaminated..

Would I be right that this wouldn't have posed any problems for Ellie and Jones as long as the muck was washed off!

If feeding with raw and jackets on, do you have to gut the rabbit or just let them have the whole lot?

I've got the feeling I'm going to have to take the jacket off as the rabbits are shot nor snared or trapped so will have to remove pellets from them..

Personally I would love to swap over to raw feeding, but alas hubby isn't keen about the idea of giving a whole raw diet but would except a partial raw diet for them.. But I'm apprehensive about doing a mixed raw/dry food diet.

Yes,.. if the rabbits have been shot then best to skin and gut, you will find the pellets easy enough then.

If Janson puntured the bladder,...and it was left, then yes it would spoil the meat, but if washed at the time it would not have had time to spoil anything.

I dont know how much Janson knows about this,.. but to avoid that, turn the rabbit on its back and just take the sharp point of a knife to the lower belly, and just make a small nick, enough to get the knife in,... then put the blade in and always lifting upwards cut up towards the head,..if you lift up as you cut, you will miss the blader and other nasty bits,...remove the badder and intestines, then cut the feet off, the skin should just pull off like a glove

The mixed raw/dry diet is good if you remember to feed the raw in the morning and the dry at night, you need to give the raw time to digest [ about 4-5 hours ] before feeding the dry, so you dont upset the stomach

Archie's eaten raw rabbit with no problems. I took a bit of the meat for a paella, and then gave him the entire skeleton and the rest of the meat and organs, such as liver and heart.

He did not have intestines or skin to eat though.

As far as mixed feeding goes... I've never had any problems. Archie gets his kibble and his chicken necks, offal and meat all in a bowl together with no intestinal upsets whatsoever.

That said, some doggies' tummies might be more sensitive than Old Iron Guts.
