RAW - What a mess

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been talekd to daeth, but looking for some guidance on feeding RAW.

We gave it a try for the 1st time over the weekend, and the beef and chicken was of no interest to him. He looked at it, and refused to eat it. We gave it another go in the evening, and he tried the beef but not the chicken.

Anyway, the mess on Monday was terrible; it just ran straight through him.

Is this the norm?

Was it just meat you gave him, or meat on the bone? It could be that he hasn't had enough bone to firm him up, or he could be allergic to either chicken or beef!

Have you read up on the ratios of bone/meat/offal?

If not, here are a couple of sites that might help...

Thanks for that info.

It was meat and bone he had. We will persist, and see how it goes.

He has had cooked chiken before. Would this still show has an allergy, or would it just be raw chicken that would have this effect?

First lesson to learn is don't apologise for asking a question
Caryll has given you some good sites. Read up on the quantities of each as raw feeding has not got all the nutrients as biscuits. So a varied diet is needed.

i would think and forgive me if i'm wrong
but i would have thought if he had an allergy to chicken of either cooked or raw he would have shown a reaction..........

sometimes on the raw they will have a messy outlay....but for the first few times i would stick to one meat for a week. so for 7days when i started i fed chicken carcasses, ground, wings, drumsticks etc.
then the second week they had beef, and from there we introduced offal. But from the start they both had bones every day.
Also don't forget to include fish. It is fantastic for them. xx

Hi, did you give him 2 protein sources in the same meal?

It may be an idea just to try one, say chicken, first. Stay on that for a couple of weeks to allow adjustment. That way you can indentify if he's intolerant to a protein source.

Remember raw is about getting the right quantities of meat, offal and a some bone.

I would have thought so. Dempsey can't eat any poultry (any birds at all, actually) whether raw or cooked.

I am new to this as well and Diesel has a terrible tum so we're starting on minced chicken but still feeding his normal diet at night so I'm slowly weaning him onto it and he's coping great!

Thanks all for the very informative information.

We did start of with 2 sources of protein, but Olli left the chicken and just opted for the beef. We will give the chicken only a go for 4/5 days, and see how he gets on.

Its no difference to a human living life eating nothing but biscuits for every meal,.. and then suddenly finding that you have venison,.. you wouldnt be too sure at first,.and I guess you would need the toilet after too.

It takes a little time, you have to allow time for the gut to settle down,...its a big change
