I am learning so much...

I have been sitting reading some of the threads on foods for the last couple of hours and i have to say what an enormous amount i have learnt. What i would like to ask is can i give some of these things to Eve as she is only 10 weeks old. For example Chicken wings , sardines , Liver cake , yogurt and cottage cheese etc or am i better waiting untill she is older.I am currently feeding her 4 times a day and 2 of the meals she seems to really enjoy the other 2 she just picks at a bit and leaves most of it , do you think i should reduce her to 3 meals a day.
Also if anyone has any recipes or other food ideas that i could use i would be really grateful.

This forum is great by the way xx

Karen

If she's picking at her meals you could start to reduce one of them over a week or so & bring her down to 3, it won't hurt.

The foods you mentioned; the chicken wings are fine (raw only, of course) so are sardines, yoghurt & cottage cheese (plain). The liver cake is probably ok in small amounts - too much will upset her tum.

I think this forum is great too, I've only been here a few months

I think others will advise you about feeding and number of meals.

There are lots of good foods you will be able to give her and lots of time . I don't know how long you have had her but I personally think a puppy needs a few weeks to settle and then I would only introduce one new food and see how she does.

I personally wouldn't feed dairy to a puppy. I think a chicken wing raw would be OK (my dog loved his but was a bit older) but see what the others say but again I would wait until she was settled in her new home first.

Are you feeding what the breeder did? Did she feed raw, many breeders do in which case she would be used to it.

Linda

If she was raw weaned you ought to be able to feed any raw meat as she should be used to variety. If not then introduce a new meat gradually and use the chicken wings or chicken mince as a buffer so one meal chicken wing, 2nd meal a new meat, third meal a chicken wing or you could mix the meals so she has chicken and a little new meat with each meal and gradually increase the new meat. We tend to use chicken and rabbit as their basic meats and only feed small amount of tripe, lamb, beef, venison, pheasant, heart etc with it but whatever works for your pup. Good luck

So glad you've found the forum helpful...

Many puppies are raw fed so I don't see why you can't feed her wings etc, just hold them at first so she doesn't inhale it

I found Diesel self regulated with his food and told us when he wanted them to be reduced....so maybe 3 meals is better for her now.

Raw chicken wings at 10 weeks is perfect. We start our pups on wings even earlier than that, they go mad for it! Just don't feed too much food with bones in otherwise their poos will be all over the place...

I give mine raw bones once or twice a week and raw chicken mince mixed with gsd puppy royal canin the rest of the time.

Very healthy happy pupsters

This is a thread that will accumulate lots of different ways of feeding and amounts of food/bone/offal etc... but you need to assess how your girl is doing by weight, general appearance and keeping an eye on the back end!

I feed everything bar pork now, but to start with we stuck to chicken for a week, if your girl has been raised on raw you shouldn't have many problems in keeping that up, if not just take it steady to allow her stomach to adjust to the change
Even now with an 8 year old crunching machine and a 10 month gobbler, i must admit i watch both mine when giving any bones (raw) just in case

Welcome to the forum xx

The only thing that I would add is that if you feed sardines from the tin, drain of the brine,..its full of salt,..other than that fish is a perfect food for dogs, Salmon and Venison are my dogs main foods

Aww thanks everyone I will take everything on board.... will definately get her some chicken wings to try.I know this sounds really dumb but what kind of bones should i get her. Also the breeder had her on wainrights complete and tinned so i have just kept her to the same although i must admit she doesn't seem that interested this last couple of days which is why i was thinking of reducing her down to 3 meals instead of 4.

I believe you should avoid weight bearing bones but someone will confirm that.

I do believe you can feed any bones though other than the above.
