Changing to raw food?

My friend is trying to persuade me to change my pup over to a raw food diet. He has give me this website The Dog Food Company - Products Page I was just wondering what people would suggest I try Kaiser on from there and what amounts? I have no idea of his weight until Thursday but he is 6 months old.

I use The Dog Food Company, Scott is lovely and very accomodating. I would start with the chicken mince ( with bone ) and the rabbit mince if he has any ( it has fur and bone included ). I would give 1/2- 1lb per meal to start with and increase from there, depending on how many times you're feeding a day. I would stick with chicken and/or rabbit for a week then gradually introduce other meats like heart and tripe. The beef can be a bit fatty so ask for lean beef mince. The carcasses, wings and necks are all good as are the bones and he does sometimes have venison but you have to ask for it. Good luck

I would offer things like Turkey legs or tripe (if you have a strong stomach) nice meaty bones are always a winner with my pooch, don't expect them to last long.

We feed Blitz about 450g of raw per sitting.

Do it gradually but don't mix so just introduce one meal a day as raw and remove all kibble for the duration not giving anymore until his next meal as the combination could upset his tummy.

We had Blitz on a complete raw diet for a few months but I was constantly getting upset with his weight flying up and down and his poo's being solid and him having constipation, we tried everything, eventually we gave up and we now feed half raw and half kibble, his poos are healthier, he is happier and we are sure the condition of his coat and teeth is down to the raw half of his diet.

You may have to play around to find a diet to suit Kaiser but the benefits will be obvious in no time!

Good luck.

I am a recent convert to raw as my GSD couldn't settle on any kibble, I started with chicken wings and minced chicken that I got from Nurturing By Nature, he coped brilliantly with this and is now eating beef, lamb, liver and fish.

Likewise I recently converted and am currently feeding raw/kibble. Raw in the mornings as it digests more quickly.

Due to freezer space (lack of it) I can't buy in bulk so I've been getting chicken wings/ drumsticks/ thighs and stewing lamb from the supermarket and jamming as much in the freezer as I can lol!

Have heard different opinions on feeding pork - perhaps somebody can clarify?

Also, I believe beef should be frozen before feeding, to kill the bacteria. Again, somebody else might clarify this.

Depends on the dog with regards to pork, mine are having trotters as part of their meal tonight and I have a couple of pig's heads in the freezer, cut into meal size portions. I cut off a lot of skin from the head as that tends to make them a bit lose. Some people don't like feeding pork but I always have, not often just when available.

I have a lack of freezer space too so I order every two weeks and top up at the supermarket so I know what you mean about jamming stuff in

I don't feed pork...x

Mine never have raw pig
But I do use Pigs liver in their treats as its cooked
Mine used to be all Raw fed but having three they are on Raw am and Orijen pm, I find it more cost effective x

The prejudice against pork is an old one. Pork used to be a real terror for worms, which could be passed to any animal if the meat wasn't thoroughly cooked. Nowadays all pigs are wormed regularly, and if you buy human grade pork, the meat will have been inspected for any signs of worms. It's perfectly safe.

Make sure you read through a couple of the sites that deal with raw diets so that you know what you're doing. Here are a couple of good ones...

We've never fed our dogs raw food. They've been brought up on a 'complete' dried diet with the occasional bit of leftover meat thrown in. All of them have thrived on it, plus it helps to keep their teeth clean. We also never use stuff like Royal Canin or Hill's. It's too damn expensive. We have a local pet food shop that does a 15Kg sack of complete for £9.00. That feeds both of them for two weeks. The ingredients, protein, vitamins and minerals etc are almost the same as the expensive stuff.Every time they go for their annual MOT they pass with flying colours. It's really a matter of finding the right diet for your dog, and how much you are prepared to pay. They don't NEED raw food as long as they get all they do need from what they are fed.
