pork contains certain parasites aslong as it is frozen first then defrosted and given no problems, cooked pig meat is ok.

Thank you for clarifying, I do not want to put my doglet at risk. Is there anything else I should avoid (apart from the obvious chocolate) as in normal stuff you would give any breed but not advisable for GSDs?

You will find a lot of GSDs can not tollerate barley it goes straight through them, most things its the same with other breeds on what to give and avoid.

I always fed James Wellbeloved until the day my eldest went off of it. She never really looked great being fed it. Someone suggested Dr Johns Silver and I haven't gone back. They both look great and are as fit as fiddles on it.

Saved myself a hell of a lot of money as well.

I have used dr johns in the past but the problem I had was my silly Jack is far too fussy and he got bored of it. I cant mix meat in to make it more interesting coz it upsets his tummy.

I came across Wagg which has different textures and bits n pieces and he loves it. U can see from my pic that he and Tess look fab!

I have been feeding Hannah a mixture of puppy Beta dry food and puppy pedifree tinned meat. Morning and eve. She really doesn't take to the biscuits, not
matter how hard I try to mix the meat in she leaves the biscuits. I don't think she really likes what we feed her, and tbh I look at it and don't blame her. But when you're on a budget you can't go over board with the cuisine.
She's 8 months old. Can anyone give advice on whats best food wise for a dog who doesn't like dry food too much, is 8 months old, and if feeding her morning and night is correct?

Also I have been strict where I won't put any food in her bowl until she has eaten the previous batch. And she will eventually eat. Buts it's putting the pattern totally out of sorts.

Lol you are doing what I did...................you feel sorry for your dog and you think he does not like the food, he likes the alternatives you give him when he does not eat his dried food ie, bits of ham out of the fridge etc

I spent months hand feeding George when he was a pup, again this is a no no, I learn't the hard way, I have been known to provide more tastier food in the past, I have never given canned meat tho, smell makes me ill.

ok feeding him how it should be done

if you seriously want him to start eating from his bowl you will have to be firm. put his food down and leave it for 10 minutes.. if he doesn't eat it, lift it. he shouldn't get anything until next meal. this includes ANY kind of treats. harsh sounding i know, but the dog wont starve itself (I promise George went well over a week without eating, it was a battle and a half but lol I won in the end, he knows now to eat his food or it will be taken away from him, and it has not made him aggressive towards food)

They will not starve themselves!!!! if their is no medical reason, like sore teeth or digestive probs for not eating, then stick with it.

Its important not to make a fuss about food time. just put the bowl down quietly and leave him. if he eats, tell him good boy and praise him, but if he doesnt eat, dont say anything.

as long as he is drinking plenty of water he will be fine!

Good Luck and keep us updated on how you get on

Thank you for the advice GSDOWNER. I have been leaving her bowl out and if it comes to next meal time and still isn't eaten I won't refill it. I'll wait to next mealtime. Should I actually be taking it away?

I just read this full thread, and everyone uses so many different brands! agh!

I want to put Hannah on something natural and good for her coat (and obviously good for her tummy) I have heard recently that a lot of the leading brands are full of sugar and additives which make the dog's high strung. (lol I think she knows I'm talking about her, she keeps putting her head on my laptop keyboard)

QUESTION TIME

1.How costly is feeding raw food? Are there places that sell it in bulk to freeze?

2. Would freezing the meat make it harmful?

3. As she is 8 months old now, would putting her on raw meat now make her ill?

4. Are pigs ears ok? I have always given them and she loves them, but I read in this thread that pigs ears poss not good?

5. Are there good alternative natural brands out there? I've looked some up but all I get is their sales pitch, not actual recommendations from the consumers.

That'll do for now. Hehe.

Thank you!

Not expensive at all IMO. I get mine from Landywoods, this is delivered once every 6 weeks or so, it arrives frozen and goes straight in my 'dog' freezer when it arrives. Take a look here:[/color] Landywood Pet Foods : Home

2. Would freezing the meat make it harmful?
No, you should reeze ALL meats and bones and defrost thoroughly prior to feeding, this will kill off anything nasty.
3. As she is 8 months old now, would putting her on raw meat now make her ill?
No, like any new food that is introduced, you should do so carefully. Usually trying them out on the less rich foods, such as chicken wings/carcasses or minced chicken and the like. Offal and lamb can be introduced later. I usually take 7-10 days to move foods completely, this prevents loose stools.

4. Are pigs ears ok? I have always given them and she loves them, but I read in this thread that pigs ears poss not good?
I don't feed mine pigs ears or rawhide chews, they can do alot of damage if your dog is particularly 'pig' like. If your dog chews these 'treats' but doesn't break them up they can slip down their throats!

5. Are there good alternative natural brands out there? I've looked some up but all I get is their sales pitch, not actual recommendations from the consumers.
Natural brands of raw foods? If this is what you mean, then no, not really. There are the likes of Natures Menu & Forthglade, but in terms of keeping it cheap you are better off going with a wholesale supplier.
That'll do for now. Hehe.

Thank you!

I am seriously thinking of changing Diesel to raw feeding.....however I really need to read up on it and start to understand it before jumping in.
