Fussy digestive system

Hi, i am new here so am not sure if this question has already been asked but......
We have an 18 month old german shepherd. When we bought her she was very under weight. Over the last 6-8 months we have managed to get some weight back onto her but have hit a problem! Virtually since we got her, her poo was always runny. The vets could find nothing wrong with her so we just kept trying different things. By accident we tried her on the beta range for delicate stomachs - instantly changed her poo habits and consistency! So we have finally found out she has a delicate digestive system - even if she manages to get a biscuit, chip, bit of meat or anything her poo changes again. Anyway the problem we have is we are now struggling to get any more weight onto her and she is also beginning to get bored with the same flavours every day (just as we would!) Any of your dogs suffer from this same problem and if so how do you give her variety?? (sorry for all the poos!)

Hi,

Many Shepherds suffer with delicate systems and it is hugely important to find something that will keep them from suffering loose stools.

I think I would be asking my vet for allergy tests, if she is this delicate there may be an underlying allergy that is causing this problem

With regards to feeding a variety, as long as she isn't allergic to anything you can feed the same food, but change the flavours, this is about as good as variety should get to prevent further loose stools!

Dogs are scavengers by nature, she won't starve herself, and she should be kept on a well balanced food to keep her system ticking over nicely.

Here endeth my contribution ...good luck and let us know how it all goes.

Jo

Hello

Diesel has a delicate stomach and we went through a few different foods before we settled on Arden Grange, lamb & rice. This was recommended to us by a GSD breeder and it really worked for Deez.

However we are now seriously thinking about BARF diet, just reading up on it.

I do find it funny that dog owners can quite happily discuss poo

In over 26yrs I have never had a problem with a dog having a delicate stomache, although I currently have one with allergies and he has eaten the same food now for 12mths he still eats it as if he was starfing. Your dog sounds as if it may have an intollerence to specific foods which will cause loose stolls, allergies dont.
If you now have a food that suites dont change it, just trying adding a small amount more.
What you can do is compare the ingredients lists of foods that may her loose to your current food, this hopefully may help in identifying what causes the loose stools.
