Raised Feeding Bowls
Just asking as on another forum, Jo will know which one, there was discussion saying that there was new evidence suggesting these made a dog more likely to bloat.
I have used them for 15yrs without a dog bloating, also I didnt use them for the preceeding 10yrs and didnt have a dog bloat then either.
Do you use them?
If so why?

George has an adjustable twin bowl, I was advised to buy a raised feeding bowl when George was diagnosed, and since I have he eats a lot better, before he was such a picky eater or he eat it really quickly (which could of caused bloat), maybe it caused him pain to eat before I gave him the raised bowls, He looked so uncomfortable when he had to bend his head all the way to the floor, IMO I would say that dogs who are not feed using raised bowls are more likely to suffer with bloat, its a long way for the food/water to have to travel UP the neck before it can go back DOWN again. Bloat usually occurs when a dog eats a large amount all at once and drinks water making the food swell, the stomach sometimes twists on itself, preventing further digestion, gases and bacteria form,
I actually believe that what's IN the food bowl might be the answer and be more important, I have also decided that dogs who burp, don't bloat............and George sure loves to burp
So I would say not only do they help him to actually eat, there is no pressure of his joints so in my case its better to be safe than sorry

As for the dog bowls. I have never used raised bowls, but i was about to get them for Zac, but lost him before i had chance. He was starting to get a bit stiff, and so was going to get them to take any strain off his joints.
I have thought about getting them for the water bowls, and may well do so in the near future. Haven't done yet, as we have enough water knocked over the floor, and if the bowls are raised, would probably get knocked over more regularly. Barney manages to bang into everything at the moment, when he is throwing his toys all over the house. Won't bother for the food, as they are fed on chunks of food (chicken wings, bones etc), they tend to lie on the floor to feed, so probably wouldn't make any difference.

I am pleased this question's come up as we've always fed Diesel using a raised bowl but I was then told this causes bloat....we've sinced lowered it, but after reading these posts I am going to raise it again
I am going to have a look on this other site at some point today - I am so intrigued!

My husband is a real gadget lover, so he bought a dogit water fountain thingy which is raised and the food bowl is also raised. I laughed at first but tbh it works really well, we discovered that Lola is a water nut and loves to dig in her water bowl, (I think she was trying to get to the other puppy that she could see in her reflection!) which of course then turned the kitchen floor into a water slide which she also loves! but I worried so much about her hurting herself as she slid around the floor and used the radiator as the stopping buffer!
Pleased to say that the Dogit fountain has stopped that, yay
Now Lola has her water digging time in the garden with her old low bowls, which she seems to enjoy just as much (still hasn't met that other puppy tho )
I hadn't heard about the possibility that a raised bowl could cause bloat, so will watch carefully for any signs.
