I have never given George raw bones or anything raw for that matter, too much blood.

I always thought bones were good for dogs teeth,

We really need people on here with more experience.

Friends,

I have started giving lamb bones raw and cooked to Max. I noticed either way he loves it. I got to know they like the marrow. So I knock the half-cut bone to extract the marrow to feed him. He loves it. But I am expecting something more from him. My breeder mentioned that his dogs (adult ones) can bite and crack a bone to get the marrow. Max is just a 6 months old puppy. However would Max eventually be able to crack a bone to get the marrow?

Thank you.

Selvam

Soft bones are fine ie poultry bones you can feed whole chickens etc, breast of lamb, the bones that cause problems are the long bones in the legs of large animals ie cows, horses and pigs as they are very hard due to the weight they were designed to carry.
Remember these must be fed RAW

I though soft-bones could be injurious as they break easily and may poke into the mouth of the god.

I guess the reason why you are asking to feed the bone raw is because it may have splinter when it is cooked?

Yes Malves, if they are cooked they are more likely to splinter and cause an injury. You are ok to give things like chicken wings, legs etc. as long as they are raw, I also give lamb necks.

I'm a bit confused, my breeder recommended raw chicken wings for the pups at the training class and a number of people gave their pups them. I asked my vet about it and he said that dog were just as likely to catch salmonella from raw chicken as humans and that he personally wouldn't give them to his dogs. Because of that I haven't - but I feel as if I'm depriving her of a treat now reading these posts.

This what I have read on it....
The digestive systems of dogs and cats are short, acidic, and handle bacteria well. This is why they are not susceptible to salmonella, parasites, or e-coli from tainted meat as humans are. Humans have very long digestive tracks which allow food to 'linger' for 24 hours or more, thus allowing more time for parasites to get into their bloodstreams.

Dear Ailsa,

Vets would definately say that raw food is bad so that they could sell their dog food. But that doesnt mean u can leave the raw food out for a long time before you feed your puppy. It should either be fresh after slaughtered or frozen. You can notice how much your dog would get crazy eating it as compared when faced with palletes.
