need help please

hi all, this is my first german shepherd dog i have had him since a puppy he is now 4 years old, problem i need help with is he wont eat his food i put down for him at the moment he is on pedigree chum as i have tried all sorts of different varieties he just sniffs it and walks off, this has been going on for about 2 years now i have to pretend to play with him to get him to eat his food, i feed him his main meal at six o clock i just wondered if this was too early to feed him and he is not hungry, should i leave it a bit later say 10 oclock at night, he has loads of exercise and has some of those bakers chunks for his early meal at about 11 in the morning should i stop giving him these?as i have been told they may be filling him too much, also what times/how many meals does your own dogs have a day,
any suggestions and help will be mostly appreciated as it is really worrying me, he is in peak condition healthwise and very energetic i just cant understand it, sorry to go on a bit
thank you

First of all, if he is in peak condition dont worry too much,.. I think you are right to feed twice a day, maybe in this case smaller meals three times a day may be better,..dont fill him up too often,..it doesnt matter too much about when as long as you feed at those times each day,..[or there abouts].

You say that you are playing a game with him in order to get him to eat,..I would stop that, he will [ has / possibly] got very used to that,.. he doesnt need it,... he will eat when he is hungry with out the play, Shepherds can be very picky eaters if they are allowed to be, I think he has now come to expect to have the game before and during meal times

I dont know anything about Bakers Chunks, but if you do continue to feed them, give him a lot less, dont fill him up, leave him wanting more.

I would give him his meal, leave it for a while and if not eaten lift it up, and dont feed till the next time,.. no treats either,..try it or a while most dogs soon learn to eat proper when they get hungry

It might be as simple as he doesnt like the food offered,.. have you tried other types of foods? a good dried food, or raw food

i agree with stuart if your dog is in peak condition he must be eating what he needs to keep him healthy maybe you are expecting him to eat too much/are the portions too big.

i have had alot of issues with cocos feeding but she was not a healthy weight and was skinny i tried lots of different foods and she didnt eat them i have now swapped to raw which she loved.

coco would not eat dry either or tinned my next door neighbour saved a fortune with all the food i passed on she didnt eat
raw feeding is basically raw meats like chicken ,lamb heart liver lungs tripe beef turkey any meats really just fed raw and some nice bones to keep your dog firm.she has mackerel one day a wk and 4 raw eggs a wk too.
the first thing i did was try coco with a raw chicken wing which she absolutely loved ,then i gave her liver and tried her with minced turkey this was before i realised you could get pet mince tripe, chicken carcasses and alot of freebies butchers dont sell.
i visit my local slaughter house to get everything and it is surprisingly cheap most pet minces are around 50p a pd chicken carcass 20p each .
i feed coco 2pds of mince a day and a bone either a quarter of chicken carcass or some lamb ribs.
today she has had 12oz ox cheek mince 4oz green tripe for brek and 1pd chicken for t.
2 rib bones as a snack.
you can go online and look at barf and raw feeding to find out more info this is what i did .
it costs me 75p to a pd a day to feed her but at least i know she is eating and enjoying her food .

Reseach, research, research.... cant say that enough, do it before you start, get it all worked out, what you feed, where you get it, the cost of it, is it a balanced diet

Krisannrio's Raw feeding site - Home <<<<< I always recommend this site, but there are hundreds of others, read as much as you can,..any question, just ask
