Hiya, I've got 5 and half month old GS pups, are they too young to give bones yet? I always thought all dog bones splintered and could cause problems for their insides but I gather from this thread its just cooked bones and not raw ones.

Yes,.. the bones should always be given raw, its the cooking of the bones that make them brittle and are likely to splinter when crushed.
Some people dont like raw feeding, so I should be correct in saying that there is always a slight risk in feeding bone,.. but I do believe that providing the bone is not too big, as to damage teeth, or bone like large knuckle bones that are often too hard,.. then personaly I see no problem if feeding raw bone,... it is natures way

I am sure other more experience owners will tell you if I am wrong, [ I have never owned puppies] but I think dogs of 5 months can handle bone provided that you give the smaller bone like raw Chicken for instance

joyce will become famous soon enough
Raw bones are fine for 5.5 months, chicken wings, rib bones, and if you can get a whole tripe and cut it into large pieces for the dogs to tear on I have found is the best teeth cleaner.

Used to feed my gsd raw tripe as a treat - and doesn't it gloss their coat.
There used to be a tripe stand on our local market, but it closed down (H&S I think said it wasn't safe to eat !!!!).
I can't find it anywhere now - where do you get it from??
