News:

The cut is now not bleeding nor bloody, it is still quite deep but looks pink/white which means healing is taking place.

He is still confined to the house, which I dont like to do but I dont want to risk it tearing or getting infected. He is being very brave and tolerant of the whole thing, not being jumpy and restless for the most part.

Still walks with a bit of a limp, but gets around easily when he wants to (if there is food, or one of us is going up the stairs )

Oh, bless! Funny how they manage to cope with things when there's food to be had!

Just thought I would update again. Dylan is almost completely recovered; the wound has almost closed up completely, and he is no longer limping.

We gave it salt water baths twice a day after he stopped wearing the bandage, and with that and his own licking it seems to have healed without infection.

I can tell he is much better because he is jumpy and wants to go outside again. I will take him this weekend for a long hike I think. He must be annoyed being cooped up for a week

Thank you so much for your help and advice

gloriab has a spectacular aura about
I have had 4 GSDs and this has happened many times.
It's really scary because cut pads bleed a lot, but don't worry.
I have found that regular bathing with boiled but cooled water with salt added keeps the wound clean and disinfected whilst helping to harden the pad. You can wrap it in the beginning, but as soon as you can, leave it uncovered. You can get something called 'vetwrap' - put over bandaging and it sticks to itself and stops them licking (get at some petshops or anywhere that deals with horse supplies - it's used to wrap horse fetlocks and in showing).
