Layer of pad come away :(

I hadn't noticed till now and feel awful for not fully checking him, we came back from acwalk and as he got out the car he knocked himself on the door and started limping I checked him by feeling and nothing seemed to bother him, I've just noticed this now as his lying down

Half of his 'main' pad on his rear leg has come away. Is there something I can do for it, is it a vets job,as this is the 1st time this has happened for me. Or will it just heel itself?
He's fine walking, but with a bit of a limp. Not licking or anything like that.

What would you advise?

Thanks

Sorry for poor picture, he wouldn't let me close for too long

If it's bleeding, clean it with a mild vinegar solution (won't sting) and put a dressing on with duct tape to seal if he'll tolerate it.

If it's bleeding a lot it might need vets for a more professional bandage and AB shot to prevent infection.

If it's not bleeding you consider trimming the flap of skin off - only if it's the superficial layer and not vascular though. The flap can get in the way. Like when we have flaps of skin hanging off a cut.

Thanks,
its not bleeding, and it does seem to be the top most layer (althohough it is thick) i can see the underneath pad (not sure on tech names ), i wasnt sure if trimming it would cause more problems or not. is it worth putting a bandage on it or let himn take care of it himself.

No experience of this. But Anni's advice seems spot on!

Is it bleeding? If not it could probably wait until the morning and then get the vet to have a look at it...keep it clean and dry this evening though xx

Ted did this with all four of his paws a months or so ago.
Keep him off his feet as much as poss, keep it clean and bathed several times a day (e.g. stand his foot in a pot of warm salty water).
Keep a close eye on it but don't let him worry at it too much.
If it drys up, it will take about 10 days to heal completely.
We did not bandage all four paws but put a baby sock on the worst one for protection for the first couple of days.
I would only go to the vet if it appeared to be infected or not healing.
Poor baby, hope it gets better real soon. x

I woudnt cut away the flap but try to use that as the dressing, it will soon knit back into place,...clean it well and put a sock on it

A while ago I purchased a dog boot, the type that sled dogs wear,.. this is a perfect time to use one, I think every owner should have one

sami is a jewel in the rough
I would try to dress it best you can as Anni says.

If it doesnt knit back with the rest of the pad and from my experience they very often dont in a couple of days you will see that its sort of dried up and "dies" then you can cut it off with no problems, try to only cut off the "dead" bit, you might have to do this a number of times.

Max used to do this all the time.

Thanks everyone I've bathed it and put a sock on although have had to put bandage tape round as he pulls it off, I've now found out it's two feet but the other one is not half as bad so have left that for now, still bathed tho, he tried drinking the salt water in bowl!! It didn't go down well!!
