otto needs an xray

Otto needs an xray the cost anything between 4 and 6 hundred pounds i have no idea if this is a fair price or not.
the problem is he has a limp which comes and goes some days its bad other days not so bad and other days no limp whatsoever hes in no pain that i can tell.
The vet says it could be growing pains or he may have a problem with his right elbow and having the xray will tell them if there is a problem with the elbow.
Otto is insured with sainsburys so i presume they will cove the costs the other thing is he will have to stay in over night will they cover the cost of the overnight stay.

I couldn't tell you the price of an x-ray but it does sounds steep I would thought that they would be cheaper!

Personally I would seek a second opinion from a different vet before laying out £400-£600 to see if it was growing pains or not...

As to the insurance side I'm sure that if he had to stay in overnight this would be covered by the insurance, but it would be wise to double check either your insurance policy or by phoning and asking them.

I had the same thing with Max many years ago and did not have an x-ray. The limp went away when he was about 18 months old.

Could be pano but that seems a lot for the xrays, why will he have to stay overnight?

Thats very expensive for Xrays.

Zak has had 3 lots already in the last 6 months, two with different practices.

each time its been around the £300 mark in total including sedation

I have the itemised bill from Devcote Veterinary Hospital where Zak had Xrays two weeks ago.

X-Ray DR Examination + 2 Exposures £122.52 inc VAT
Anaesthesia £141.22

Perhaps they are doing more exposures? or other things ontop.

I cant see any reason why he would have to stay in overnight.

I would imagine other than the excess the insurance would cover it all anyway.

How old is Otto?
Cant see the point if he's under a year old as his bones wont be formed yet
Thats why hip and elbow scores are not done before then

It does seem very high for a single x-ray

How long has Otto had the limp?,..I would have thought that if he had a real problem that the limp would be constant, sometimes a bad sprain will come and go for ages and ages before it finaly ends,..they tend to get a bit better, or seem to be fixed,..then is pulled a bit on a walk, and the limp is back

So I would be interested in how long it has gone on for

Thats a good point Linda, I have thought about leaving Zak to mature but as he is in alot of pain when getting up I cant.

The vet did show me a book of what a healthy dog at 8 months should look like then showed me the Xrays. There was a noticable difference. Saying that though I think Zak is an extreme as he isnt suitable for a TPO either

Otto had his 1st birthday last week hes had the limp for about 3 months. But its on and off its not constant he can go 2/3 weeks without the limp then it comes back 3/4 days.
but it does not stop him from doing anything as i said hes in no pain that i can tell.
I just dont know what to do should i go with the xrays or just see how he goes.
So any advice most welcome
