operation

we just found out, the st bernard that attacked pappy got rushed to the vets this mroning. all the back of his ear was swollen really badly, oh said it looked like a golf ball behind his ear. the vet said he needed an emergency operation because he had the worst ear infection he had ever seen since he was a vet.and hes been a vet for as long as i can remember. he said the vet said he reckons the dog had the infection for at least 2 years if not more.and never been treated. the owner of st bernard has only owned the dog for short while, so it was previous owners fault. the vet did the op within a couple of hours of seeing him this morning.. the owner told my oh that the vet also said ear infections can make them go crazy..although iv no idea if this is true as i wasnt there to hear it.. or whether hes just saying about the dogs going crazy to make excuses for the dog

Well an ear infection like that could well account for the attack on Pappy,.. you know just how very bad mooded we can all get if we have ear problems, or tooth ache, for a dog it must be worse because they cant do anything about it

Put that together with the fact that these dogs are normally gentle giants,..and it is certainly an explaination.

As for both attacking,..well we know that very often if one starts another can soon join in,...I am not saying that it is this, but it is certainly very possible

Hmm, I've seen a fair few ear infections and would love to know how you gauge that it has been there for 2 years.

Any chance that it was bitten during the attack on Pappy and infection has set in?

I'm not saying that the dog hasn't got an ear infection, I just don't believe that it has had it for 2 years without anyone noticing it before.

i dont think it was bitten.thats not to say it wasnt. but all i remember is pappy on the ground and not defending himself at all. not unless the other st bernard caught his ear. he did tell my oh that op cost nearly £300..i dont know what vets would charge for the op. and he went to same vet pappy goes to, and our vets is very good on price, compared to the others round here. but iv no idea if hes telling truth or not. although my oh said the dogs ear was swollen wuite bad..just behind his ear

The ear infection could certainly make the dog unhappy and cause a nasty reaction, it's no excuse what happened to Pappy though...xx
