My 3 legged friend

My best friend(Guiness our 18 month old GSD)suffered a freak leg break yesterday to one of his hind legs and the Vet has informed my that it impossible to re-set.Amputation is the only realistic option. As you can imagine this has left all our familly heartbroken.
Has anyone out there had any similar experiences who can offer advice as to how their pet has coped after losing a limb?
Yours,
Chris(currently inconsoleable).

Chris I am sure you are devastated , I would be too. I have never had to cope with this myself but from what I have read and been told they cope really well.

Hopefully someone else on here will be more knowledgeable.

So sorry to hear this, this must be so had for you,.. all I can tell you is that once the leg is lost, and they get over the opperation, then they dont see themselves as different, it will hardly impact on his life at all.

I hope that someone can give better advice,... but please keep us informed as how Guiness gets on,... this is a terrible way to join the forum, but it is a place that you will find support, and the best advice we can muster at least

So sorry to hear your terrible news.
I have never shared my life with a dog with three legs, but my friend had a whippet with three legs.
She had a long and happy life, when she ran you couldn't even tell.
I know theres a big difference in a whippet and a gsd, and she was a very young dog when she lost her leg (r t a)
But I am sure your baby will cope.
Thinking of you and your baby, hope your dog heals really quick.
Mazz xx

So sorry to hear, but as others have said, once hes recovered from the op he will adapt. I knew a dog when i was younger who was missing a leg, and you wouldn't have known judging by the speed he could go.

Best wishes, im sure its a horrible time for you all.

Thanks

Many thanks for all your support(really overwhelmed).
Guiness is such a wonderfully athletic young fella I feel very confident that he'll adapt to the challenges that he faces-the one thing I do know is that he'll never be short of love and attention.
Thanks again to you all,
Chris.
