bruja spayed

well bruja was spayed on monday.on tenderhooks for that entire day until i brought her home.
she just fine,ud think shes had nothing done.but my problem is that as she only allowed out to do her business on a lead.and she wont.end of.shes always been like that she only goes in her garden and thats it and defo not on a lead.then its that look of why cant i have a run as i bring her back in.shes like a caged lion pacing in the house.and getting a bit naughty as shes not supposed to play.i have sent merlin to live with his dad whilst she recovers, but another week of this is going to be hard work.how does other people cope with this.ideas welcome.no walks and no play makes it a very long day.

Vet told us walks were ok after a few days, the most important thing is no jumping on + off bed/sofa etc. No reason why she can't have a potter round garden without a lead, I think the lead thing is meant re walks, ie no running around fields etc, but in garden she'll be fine.

Tilly had lead only walks for a few weeks, as soon as her stitches were out she was more or less back to normal

Hope she mends quickly xxx

Zeus holds himself while on walks and for as long as possible when we're on holiday or at moto-x meets, he is really particular where he does his business too. Persevere with her, I use an extendable lead if we're away and keep it loose so he doesn't feel that i'm breathing down his neck. He goes eventually but it takes an absolute age, I keep repeating his que words that he learnt as a pup...get busy, go wee, go poo lol.
Other than that I just keep walking around and let him stop and sniff as much as he wants till he gets the message that we're not going back till he's done his business.
After relieving himself for the first time in the new place he's fine and will happily go more frequently.

Take her off the lead in the garden. Mine went out in garden when she came back from vets and was fine. kept the other dogs in until she was steadier but after that all went out together. Just kept an eye on her. Lead walks until stitched out then that was it. The keeping them on a lead is only to prevent them jumping or being jumped on.

thanks, her stitches are dissolvable and on the inside of the incision so you cant really see anything apart from the scar that will be.she dosent bother with it.was given a lampshade collar, but dont bother with it as it falls off and annoys her more than the scar.then again i havent left her yet.just took her out.let her off lead to do her business and put her back on before she did her lap of honour as she always does after going.glad that i taught her to go on asking otherwise i could be there forever.but on her lead she just wont go.without a fuss.just ordered a couple of extreme kongs so she can keep busy in the house, shes ate me out of all other toys. should i walk her .as vet suggested at least another week before i take her for half hour, gentle walking.well shes climbing the walls now with pent up energy and frustration.im not saying the vet is wrong but every dog is different.

I would think there is more danger of her doing damage if she doesn't get out!

You only really need to stop her jumping up and running around so I would lead walk her for now, preferably in an area where you know there are no other dogs running around free - the last thing you need is a dog coming over and trying to get her to 'play' or attacking her.

Are you sure the vet did not mean to lead walk her for a week before letting her off lead?

When my girl had her spleen out (massive op.) I was told to lead walk her for a week then let her rejoin my other dogs on their normal walk.

After all they have stitches removed after 10 days, so should be pretty much back to normal then.

Kira is going in to be spayed on Monday and I have been told lead walking only until stitches come out (10 days). We have a very large garden and there are frequently rabbits in there, which she cannot resist chasing, so she will be going in the garden on an extending lead for at least a few days.

I think that is ridiculous to be honest!

How are you meant to keep an 11 month old GSD 'resting' for a week!!! She will be climbing the walls.

Even with people, hospitals like to get them up and about as soon as possible after an operation. They even discharge new mums after 24 hours nowadays!

Obviously you don't want her running around and play fighting with other dogs, but I cannot see what harm a half hour lead walk would do.

Like I said my GSD had her spleen removed in a two hour operation (big scar), she had the operation on the Monday and we picked her up on the following Thursday (they wanted to keep her in longer but could not get her to eat). I immediately started to lead walk her and after 10 days she was back to her normal walks with my other dogs, running around and playing.

Maybe they are being over cautious and covering their own backs just in case something goes wrong!

Sometimes it is best to just use your own common sense.

Sue

chazzvetnurse27 will become famous soon enough
The sooner they are up and moving the better!

Not running round like headless chickens obviously but they need to get their exercise and the blood flowing! It helps the healing process!

I would have supervised "off the lead time" in the garden and short lead walks until the stitches are out x
