Scabby scrotum!?!

I have just got back from 5 days away having left my Ted with him indoors.
He reports nothing unusual during that time, but I have found that Ted has developed lots of scabby places on his scrotum which were not there when I left. They are all over and do not look like he has injured himself while charging about for example. It is very strange.
He was castrated in March and his little sack has been shrinking gradually but I am concerned in case it is something nasty.
Anyone got any ideas???

Are they anywhere else? Could he have landed on a bramble? Ellie miss judged a jump once n rather than going over the ditch filled with brambles she landed in the middle!!

It is very hard to get a photo but here is my best effort.
The black area is all the scabby bit but there is more all over his scrotum.
I cant think it is an injury as it is all over and looks more like an irritation than an injury. It is deep into the fur and the skin underneath the scabs seems pink but clean. It is nowhere else on his body.
I have not noticed him nadging at that area since I have been home and my OH says he noticed nothing strange either.
Vets is absolute last resort as getting him to show the vet that area requires wrestling and big stress and maybe even a sedative he is so freaked out since his op.

Typical, I go away for a few days and this is what happens.............

Hi Gill

lovely subject for a Tuesday morning.

My only input is that my Max had a similar thing when he went into kennels and that was put down to the Jeyes fluid they clean the runs out with. He didnt have it anywhere else either.

Has other half cleaned up over vigourously with somehting and Ted has been lying in it?

I would try to bathe it for a couple of days and see how it is. Cant see that it can be anything too serious. My only other thought was whether he had been nibbling at it,maybe it is a bit itchy as it shrinks down???

Thanks Tracy
No chance it was OH cleaning! He did manage to push the hoover round once in 5 days but no chemicals used.
I will try and bathe it as you suggest, he is ok about me touching him there. It might be something to do with it shrinking down and I will monitor it for a while.
Strange place to get scabby though.
He is not bothered by it in the slightest.
Thanks for your advice. x

LucyA is on a distinguished road
It may well be worth calling the vet just to ask if it is normal or doing a quick google to see if it is common following castration...

Bums / scrotums.. we don't mind on here! That's one you can show to Ted's first girlfriend, Gill!

It looks clean, just some dried blood & skin so I'd bathe it and monitor. I'd get the dried flakey bits out with a soft bristle brush if they're loose. It might have been an insect bite that bothered him, he's chewed it and made it bleed. Belly rubz to Teddy x

Just spent ages googling it and it may well be just a skin infection. Can be caused by bacteria or fungal infections. There is even some algae that can cause it and he is "Aqua Dog" so that might be an answer.
I will bathe with Hibbiscrub and see how we get on.

PS my husband thinks it is typcial that within an hour of returning home I have examined every part of my dog's most intimate crevices, whereas he gets nothing like the same kind of attention!
