Bilateral cryptorchidism
I'm upset and worried, as I only discovered it yesterday on Remus. He had a slight limp on his back R) leg so I was palpating his leg and moving his hip etc... When I felt up under his groin while he was in standing, his undescended testicles were palpable either side of the prescrotal area.
A few minutes later I checked again, and couldn't feel them as much, so I presume they'd gone up more into the cavity? He's not one for lying on his back - I know you can see and feel undescended testes easier in that position. I got him as a young adult rescue (he'll be 3 this November). Vet has checked him out on several occasions and hasn't mentioned it before, they have him down as neutered. I'm going to call them tomorrow to discuss it.
He doesn't display any of the behavioural signs of being entire which dogs with cryptochidism can do, and is healthy / happy in himself. I've read about increased cancer risk, and obviously genetics but can someone offer me any advice if their dog(s) have the condition / treatment outcome?

Sorry never had a dog with undecended testicles, my neighbours dog had 1 remaining in the body cavity - treatment was castration it is a bit more involved than normaly surgery with bigger scars but heals quickly

Thanks Pam, from what I've read surgery is recommended in dogs under 5 years, and a bit like a spay it's more involved as it's into the abdo cavity. My poor dog He's my everything.

Try not to worry Anni, you have spotted this early and he seems fine in himself. Let us know what the vet says xx

Castration is recommended as the undescended testicles can lead to a higher probability of cancer.
It's more involved because they have to 'find' both testicles within the body cavity. If they are still palpable, then at least they haven't migrated into the fatty tissue, which is the worst scenario. Usually, as long as they know where they are, it's a starightforward proceedure for the vet, although it'll be more expensive than a normal castration.
The vets wouldn't have noticed on general examination unless they were actually looking for cryptorchidism, they would just assume that he'd been neutered as the testicles weren't apparent.

I have never heard of a dog with two undescended love spuds, you learn something new everyday, wow. I suppose if you get one undescended there is no reason that it cant happen with both, Anni try not to worry, speak to the vets sweetheart, dont panic, but good luck and keep us posted hunny xxx
