Juvenile pyodermia (bit of a long one, pic included)

Greetings folks and folkettes...

My boy chaos is a poorly boy... in 5 months its his first illness and it was honestly upsetting to see him such a state.

Last week, me and kerry noticed some small red marks around his genitals, he began to nibble and 'scrat' more and more around that area. We took him to our vets where he was prescribed a course of Prednisolone 5mg.

Last night.... WELL....

He spent the day with me, we took a good walk in the park, he ate well, nothing out of the ordinary... i even allowed him extra time on the bed to take a nap with me.

At around 11pm, he was in his cage (next to our bed) and settling down to sleep when he began to cry loudly, we took a look and WOW... his eyes were so puffed up, he could hardly see, i managed to get a photo but excuse the quality...

I didnt half panic!!

I rang the emergency vets, who in all respect were very helpful and honest... she said it sounded like a 'small allergy reaction' and said the best thing to do was clean his eyes slowly and carefully with warm water till they subside. She said that we would have to pay £100 for a consultation for something that may be minor and could be treated ourselves, so i thanked her for her honesty.

We set about cleaning him up but as his eyes went down, his symptoms seem to increase... such as...

Reluctance to urinate (when he does, its toxic yellow)
He has bad discoloured diarhorrea (very very smelly)
His small red scabs around genitals have become further inflammed
His ears became red and inflammed
His eyes were as above
his anxiety and raised beyond belief and he cant bare be apart from us

I took him to see Mr Jones (vet) today at 10.50am this morning where he was examined thoroughly as he soon became the vets best pal.

He found the inflammations to be very sore, his ears and eye swelling had subsided and he appeared very 'depressed'

Following a 20 minute consultation, it was said that he was suffering from 'juvenile pyodermia'

Its believed that his scratting and worrying has resulted in a flare up of a hive like condition in his eyes and ears...

Im told its very common for his breed and age and i was assured not to worry...

An injection, a course of Noroclav 250mg and more Prednisolone 5mg later and hes now back home feeling sorry for himself.

Has anybody any previous dealings with this condition or behaviour...??

Any advice or further information will be great....

On a brighter note, i have a new lucky charm thanks to my lickle lad...

Poor little man!!! I think you did very well to remain calm when he looked like that! Sorry I can't offer any advice, but please pass on some very gentle belly rubs to Chaos and hope he gets better soon!

Poor chap! At least you know what it is. The pyoderma conditions seem to have strong associations with stress. The hypersensitivity which manifests itself as itchy spots, inflammation etc is linked with the way the dog's central nervous system deals with stress.

So it's easy to see how once he has the hot spots, this can make him anxious, which in turn flares up his reaction even more. Hopefully with the meds he can feel more comfortable. It may be occur again as he matures, some dogs have a predisposition to skin stuff if they've had it as pups. If that's the case, then you're looking at skin mark up tests, biopsies etc to find the route cause.

What's the going rate for the tooth fairy these days?!

The facial swelling is a typical allergic reaction. It could have been a reaction to something the vet gave him, or something he picked up on the walk (sniffing around etc.).

The first time my girl had it I totally freaked out, I had left her in the morning perfectly normal - came home at dinner and she looked like she had gone six rounds with Mike Tyson!!!

Flew to the vets only to have them quite calmly tell me it was a normal allergic reaction to something or other, I would probably never find out what it was though.

Never did find out what it was, but it happened a few more times over her lifetime. I think one of the times it may have been a reaction to the antibiotics she was on. On one occasion her face swelled so much that it was affecting her breathing and I could feel lumps round her ears and down her neck, that time I rushed her to the vets and they gave her an injection to counter the allergy. Other times I just left it and the swelling went down within 24 hours.

Tedsmum will become famous soon enough
Hi so sorry for you boy, he looks so sad for himself.
Just my opinion but I would suspect that the spotty belly is nothing to do with the allergic reaction.
It is not uncommn for young dogs to have juvenile acne, especially in that area. It can be uncomfortable but not usually a long term condition.
However, the facial swelling is very typical of an allergic reaction.
Did his paws swell too?
This is probably a reaction to something, pollen, bee sting many things. As Sue said, it is unlikely you will ever find out the cause.
I had this in a young dog once and he was so swollen he looked like he was deformed. He had a jab of anti inflamitory and he was back for normal in 24 hours. We never found what it was, but it was from the garden as that was the only place he had been. The vet suggested it may have been eating a plant he was allergic to.
I hope he is back to normal very soon, poor lad. x

I have never heard about this before, but its good that we live and learn, thank you for a detailed `report` it may well help others

I hope that he is back to normal now,.. you will have to expect it to happen again, because if you dont really know what caused the reaction in the first place, you cant avoid it in the future

As Stuart says it will probably happen again, so be aware of it.

The funny thing was I had GSD litter sisters at the time and a Belgian Shepherd, they all lived/were walked together and ate exactly the same food, yet it only ever happened to the one bitch. The other two never had anything like it.

Also she never had any other symptoms whatsoever. The swelling went down by itself and the following day she was perfectly fine!

It just looks so dramatic it's hard not to panic when you encounter it for the first time.

Sue
