Puppy sick after eating her dried food?

Hi All,

We have a GSD puppy who is now 4 months old. She is currently on the royal canine GSD junior dried food and has been since since about 5 weeks. Over the last day though she is eating her food and then within about 30 seconds she is sick and bringing it back up. She has occaisonaly before now made the noises and actions as if she is about to be sick but has not always been so.

Strange thing is that she managed to eat a pile of it this morn while I was cleaning up elsewhere and that stayed down her fine! We've not noticed any other symptons and she seems her normal full of it self otherwise. But I'm worried she's not getting the food she needs.

We're going to have a word with the breeder today but wondered if anyone here had any tips, suggestions....previous experience.

Thanks,
Craig

Amazon Amazon

Those are supposed to help by making it harder for her to eat it as quickly.
Also try feeding less in the morning and more in other meals.

Also, do you soak her food before giving it? I would be inclined to do that if not. Bear in mind that some foods don't suit certain dogs (all dogs are different).

Hi,

I've not noticed she's eating any faster than normal and she's not rushing for water afterwards. At the moment she has a larger breakfast and tea with just a small lunch. Also we've never soaked the food. I did give her a small amount again this morn after she had been sick a couple of times....and i did soak that first. She looked like she was about to be sick again after finishing it so I grabbed her and took her to the door at which point she stopped.

Could maybe understand it if we had changed her food. We're going to try just giving her a few bits at a time at lunch and see if she's ok with that. Guess it's a process of elimination!

Thanks for advice.
Craig

Quick update ...just spoken with our breeder and she said it sounds like she's eaten something thats upset her stomach or she's eating too fast. She recommended not giving her any more food today and giving her some pepto bismol to calm her stomach.

Fingers crossed!

Hi All,

Thought I'd just give an update. After a week of stress all round we think we've finally made a break through yesterday.

Poor Kassie has been knocked out, x-rayed, have injections and she's on antibiotics. Had a diet of plain chicen, rice, pasta, egg etc for a week. We started to re-introduce her normal food yesterday and she's on the royal canine junior for GSD's. As soon as she had that she started to be sick again. Spoke to the vet straight away and we grabbed some different food for her. Started blending this dried mix in with the plain food she's still on and all seems fine, no sign of been sick etc.

So we think we've got a dodgy sack of food. Our pet store is going to refund us and sent it back for analysis. Hopefully Kassie is on the mend now and we can still to fill her up again!

We did get her one of the food bowls though and it seems really good.
Thanks for the advice.
Craig

Just seen this does sound as though she has been eating too fast and too much at a time. Was going to suggest a raised bowel but the one you have looks fine should slow her down. Puppies do pick up all kinds of things and they upset them. Think I would give all her meals evenly matched she will be really hungry for the first meal of the day and gulp it. It does want soaking a little not too a mush but if she gets a hard piece stuck in her throat she will vomit.
Sounds as though you have done everything you can for her and I hope she continues to improve. Try not to let her race around before or after a meal difficult I know with pups
