ear infection advice....

Hi there!

Well, we have the flea allergy stuff under control, and the diet under control but i can't seem to stop Rogue getting ear infections!

She has woken up with pus all down one side of her face this morning out of absolutely nowhere!

I know sheps are prone to these things but it seems to be a constant thing with her at the moment! I can't FACE another 40 quid at the vet for some antiseptic and antibiotics.... if this is going to be a regular thing i might as well buy the stuff in in bulk it might be cheaper!!

Does anyone else have this kind of problem and how do you treat it? She's shaking her head like crazy at the moment bless her!!!

Clean the ears daily with salty water(cooled boiled water)and cotton wool balls. Then when dry use white vinegar dabbed on a cotton wall ball and coat the inside of the ear.
Vinegar is a great antiseptic
I never use anything other than salt and vinegar in my dogs ears.
Never had any infections either.

If she really has pus all down her face then she needs to see the vet again to check that there is nothing in the ear that could be causing it - a grass seed maybe. If any of my dogs has had an ear infection there has never been visible pus.

Hi, has your vet suggested any reason for the ear infections.

You mention flea allergies under control so my first thought is diet and does she have any skin problems. My own 'personal' theory is that if the diet is right and no allergies or food intolerances and the ears are kept clean that Rogue should have minimal problems.

My shep also get waxy ears from tiime to time. I would be worried about pus because that implies to me (not a vet, nor a trainer) a bacterial infection.

I have just tried Thornit for the first time and it has calmed Lukey's ear down, two applications 2 - 3 days apart but I am not sure I would have used it if there was pus there.

Someone else on here is bound to be able to help and will have used Thornit more than me so hopefully you will get some more ideas.

I think I would also be willing to try a very mild salt solution and mild vinegar solution but if there is any soreness I think either or those would sting.

I'm sorry your dog has this, you must be thoroughly fed up of vets visits and paying out as well.

Wishing you well and hoping you can get to the route problem of why he keeps getting them.

Linda

I use Thornit and it is very good BUT if she has puss running down her face it points to a very severe infection and she may well need antibiotics. This does need a vet love. If the actual ear drum is very infected it could lead to loss of hearing if not treated.

I had my Max (a while ago now I know but still) he took forever to put his ears up, he was over a year old when he finally gave in. This resulted in continued ear infections up until he was about 2. In the end the vet put him on a prolonged anibiotic (the ones you squirt in the ear) I think it was for abnout 6 weeks if IU remember, and that seemed to do the trick.

ah cool, thanks all.

the liquid isn't actually coming from inside her ear, its where she has nicked it scratching and thats what got infected... we just couldn't see it because it was covered in fur!

We've given in and seen the vet (Again!) and she has given us some antibiotics.

I actually didn't realise that the ear canals were connected so that any infection she picked up in one ear is more than likely in the other one too which i think is where i've been going wrong as we've been treating one ear at a time.

The vet suggested thornit.... we're going to try that until the infection clears up but i do prefer a more organic method so i'm going to give Lutguard's recipe a go (cheers for that!) and see if i can't keep it all under control that way.

Seriously, its just oooone thing after another with my furbabies!!

I dont think either would sting, I know the vinegar does'nt as I use it when my excema is bad.
Good Luck with it
