Does my GSD have conjunctivitis
He often gets crusty eyes in the morning like all dogs, just after sleeping.
Nothing worry about.
Although the last 2 days he in his right eye he has a yellow / greenish gunk in his eyes which always returns.
Any ideas?
I guess we need to take a trip to the dreaded vets

Hi
This may sound a bit weird but it does work!! when-ever any of my animals or children come to that, have sticky eyes I bathe them in cold tea (no milk or sugar!!) just soak some cotton wool in the tea, clean the eye every few hours and within a day all is better.........this is an old wives remedy that does work, at least every-time I have used it. Apparently there is an enzyme in the tea that is a natural healer for eye complaints?? I am sure lots of others will have 'normal' treatments but thought I would share this. xx

If the gunk is yellowish green, then that's definitely a sign of infection + you need to go to vet as you'll probably need some ABs
Tilly suffers with conjunctivitis + the gunk is not yellowish green

I would agree with Tracey, if the gunk is yellowy green then it's infected...x

Hi ricky,
We had this only last week, so although im no expert but i can tell you what the vet said and did with us.
He looked at the bottom of her eye, just pushing the 'bottom eyelid' part down a bit, and looked at the colour. It was quite red and he said that shows that its conjunctivitis. He just gave us some eye drops and said it should clear up and that the colour should be a more pale pink colour below the eye.
Also, the cause of it was having her head out of the car window apparantly (if your's do this it could also be why?).

It's the colour of the stuff Mike, Tilly has very bad conjunctivitis + I suffer from it myself, if its yellow/green it's more likely to be infection, which can keep coming back if not treated with ABs
Besides that, it's one of the most uncomfortable things in the world, like having grit in your eyes, which causes the redness, which if not treated can cause infection
I've had seriously infected eyes, when the infection has cleared I've still had conjunctivitis, only my eyes have no longer been infected
Does that make sense?

I would do simular to the suggestion Cada gave, but instead of the cold tea, its easier to use the tea bag once its cold,... Keep it up for a short while, and I am sure you will find that it will disapear,... far cheaper than any vets

He is looking better now.
£35 quid for the vets to look at him for seconds and single prescription.
Utterly infuriating.

I use either Golden Eye Ointment or Brolene eye drops from the chemist (have to say they are for a person). Either have cleared any sore eye problems but I would take Lukey to the vets if it didn't or it was severe.
I'll remember the teabags though

Yeah does anyone know of any chemist / other retailers I can get drops?
I really dont want to pay those extortionate prices at the vets again.
