Care of teeth

When Lukey was fed almost entirely raw he had near perfect teeth.

Then he got SIBO and went back onto kibble and trays of nature diet and now he has some brown tartar on his top canines (the long ones) at the top near his gums

The question is can I take that off with something other than him going to the vets?

He now has marrow bones back, dental stix and plaque off powder (most days) and sometimes chicken wings.

The brown stuff looks like it would come off. Have any of you got any sort of dental thing and done your dogs teeth or would a piece of muslin cloth round my finger with something abrasive take it off.

He would be much less stressed with me having a go if it's possible, than a trip to the vets.

Also do you/would you if you were me brush his teeth/

Thanks.

Thanks, yes he is having that - although I don't always remember - there is just this stubborn stuff which I was hoping I could shift as it is right up at the gum line.

I just use my nail, it's quick and easy, if it won't come off then I use the end of a metal teaspoon or an old blunt butter knife.

Thank you everyone. I'm afraid he is not a chewer. Unless he gets a marrow bone or something with meat on he won't expend his energy on chewing. There are plenty of things laying around for him to have a go at but he is not interested.

Thanks Alison I am going to see if I can budge it

Stewart he might like fish but I am wary since the SIBO dx as his digestion is very stable. He is on AB's two weeks on and two weeks off. Thank you anyway.

Thanks everyone who replied.

My poppet (woops mustn't tell him I call him that) will have clean teeth

Aww good luck, even on a totally raw diet I find they get a bit of tartar on their canines so sometimes have to scrape that off, they don't mind if it's followed by a treat

I've had a go with my nail then a teaspoon and most of it is hard sadly - I got a bit of soft off but the other wouldn't budge - at least I made sure the area near his gum was clear
