pappy in the wars again :-(

hubby took pappy for his usual walk this morning, and pappy was walking in the river/floods. and when he came out hubby noticed he had blood all over his paw and leg. he had a look to see what he had done. pappy had ripped his dew claw!! think its front right leg. it was hanging! it was all twisted. have no idea what he caught it on. hubby took him straight to the vets, and the vet just ripped it off!! said it wasnt attached to anything, dont know whether he meant it was not normally attached to anything, or whether it was to bably damaged and was no longer attached to anything
poor pappy everytime he goes to the vets, its for something bad, either injections, when he got attacked, getting wound drained, getting staples out and now the dew claw. hes going to really start hating vets before long

Poor Pappy, I'm sure the vet meant he had more or less pulled it off so he finished the job off.

Hope Pappy is soon better and stays safe x

Bless him. Dew claws are one of those things that I personally think should be removed as pups as standard as they're not needed in domesticated dogs and tend to cause problems at some point.

Poor Pappy! I agree, I think all the dew claws should be removed. My vet says the front ones aren't because they are used for grooming (not with mine, they're not!) and are 'attached' to the leg whereas the back ones are normally only held on by skin & gristle! But if it was done with a local anaesthetic as a very young pup, it wouldn't hurt & would heal in no time.

i think there is a law stopping front dew claw removal (i could be wrong) they do use front ones a lot if u watch for it, grooming, itching holding things n so on. i do think rear ones should be removed as a pup (a lot of breeders will do this) as they are usually hardly attached at all. its such a worru to not chop them off when trimming as some are litterally held on by a few hairs (so it seems) and they do generally just cause problems tbh

bless him, hope he,s ok.
Rory had a very bad experience at the vet years ago and was terrified,
so I cleared it with the surgery to just go in the waiting room and sit there, I used to slip the staff some dog treats to give him, eventually he was able to go throughto a small room and be weighed, followed by some goodies and lots of fuss.

Eventually his fear of the vets dissapaited and he,s fine now, why not give it a go

Aw poor Pappy.
I am sure he will be back to his old self really soon bless him.
We had Ted's back dew claws removed when he had the snip but he still has his front ones.
He uses them for itching his face and for holding onto things when having a chew.
They are usually quite flat to the foot but if they get snagged they can be a problem as Pappy found out.
Big hugs to you both. x
