question about fresh pancreas

Hi I have a 5 year old german shepard name Tango who has EPI well he is on natrual instinct chicken RAW twice a day and he gets natrual balance alpha dog chicken two cups twice a day he also gets 1000mcg of vitamin B12 and 800 mcg of folate and also 2 pills of probiotiqs.he was getting pancreatin 8x with the kibble .here is my question I found a meatprocessing plant owner who gives me all the fresh cow pancreas I want . I picked up 5 lbs today slaughtered at 12 pm and cut them into 6 oz servings to go with each serving of kibble and froze them immediately. I put one bag in fridge for later on today. Question is am I giving enough pancreas and how long is it ok in fridge? What's the best way to deforst it ? The powder didn't help to put weight on him but he didn't loose any more either stools are firm and less frequent and look like they belong to a dog not a horse. Thanks for all the help and advice.

Hi as I understand, I thought it was pig's pancreas that did the job. I'm sure someone else will come on - but I have fed it to my dog in the past when he was younger and would think about 2oz of pig's pancreas with each meal was about right but wait for other opinions.

As for keeping if it is fresh I think it would be OK for 2 - 3 days and I used to freeze some.

My dog doesn't have EPI but I too give B12 drops and folic acid as he has SIBO.

Hope your boy continues to be OK.

Linda

They say that cow pancreas will work just as well.

You have to liquidise the pancreas and mix it into the food to get the full effect, this allows the enzymes to start working on the food immediately.

I know little about the quantities/concept of pancreas, but any fresh meat, re-fridgerated and kept covered should last 3 days, you may push 4 days if it stays in the fridge without bringing into a warm environment.

For defrosting if you want it that day i would leave it out on your draining board, if you don't want it for a couple days, then pop it into your fridge frozen, but don't forget to put it into a bowl or plastic lunchbox as the blood will drip onto everything else in there :P
