LindaM will become famous soon enough
I've been using Thornit which I think really helped. I think what I haven't been doing enough of is wiping away the debris it threw up so having to use an ear cleaner from the vets which I think is a bit harsh. Mind you I think Thornit could be if you used too much.

Having had spaniels before I thought a dog with big open ears would mean healthier ears but occasionally Lukey's do get a bit red. I am using a cosmetic cotton wool pad soaked in hot water then wrung out very tightly to clean excess wax or I use my finger. Sounds a bit yucky but they wash afterwoods

I use nothing but cooled boiled water with salt in, when dry I use straight white vinegar.
No expensive products needed.

This sounds as if you will need ear drops, you can only get so far down safely, the tilting of his head is a clear sign

We noticed Blitz shaking his head a lot last week, we got some cooled water from the kettle and tipped it down his ear, gave the canal a good rub (you can feel it just below the ear, feels like a long lump) then let him shake it out, then cleaned the outter ear with wipes, I also used my fingers to get down and pull the stubborn bits out.
Wasn't pretty and it took both of us to pin him to be able to do it but his ears have been fine since and he hasn't been shaking his head either.
The reason I did it like that is because when he was young the vet showed me to do that but with antibacterial ear drops, clean and sterile water has the same effect and also less expensive.
Blitz was not impressed but was so happy when we let him go that he was friends with us straight away as he needed friends at his release party to celebrate with :P
