Ear problem

Hi all,

I'm new to this site so sorry if this has been mentioned before but here it goes-

I have a 10 year old female German Shepherd and every now and again after she's been laid down she tilts her head to one side and has to shake it off, a bit like us trying to pop our ears, this last time she has been able to shake it off for a day or so and now there's a build up of brown sticky substance (guessing its wax) but it's leaking onto her sheets in her basket.

Any advice?

Hi and Welcome.

It is certain to be a build up of wax, and I am guessing an infection deep in the ear too,.. if it had not been quite as bad as it sounds then I would suggest a simple clean with boiled water and some diluted white vinegar and useing a baby wipe,... but I think in this case you might better be adviced to go to the vet and get some treatment, probably in the form of ear drops

Hello and welcome.
Hope your girl feels better soon. I would be taking her to see the vet, as ear ache can be very painful and can send you off balance.
She is a good age so just a little check up might be a good thing.
Gentle tummy tickles for your baby.

Bonnie has suffered from ear problems since she was very ickle, I use olive oil in her ears.... it softens the wax making it much easier to remove from the ear. Just a few drops, massage in and then wipe with a cotton pad. Once you have all the gunk out you could get a better look inside for any signs of infection i.e redness or maybe small cut. xxx

ok thanks, we rescued her for a animal centre at the age of 9 and she has a bent over ear from a problem she had when she was a puppy, but where not sure as to what it was. I have tried looking at her ear but she wont let me, she just enjoys me rubbing under the ear so i think a trip to the vets is best

If their ears dont "come up" they can easily get infections so it might be thats the case.

You can get ear cleaning stuff from the pet shop which would be worth a try but you may well need some antibiotics to cure it.
