Red face Fritz Castrated today

Well its been on the agenda now for sometime to have Fritz castrated. But hadnt upto now found a vet that I felt could be trusted. Vets sugery right under my nose, fantastic & relaxed vet was excellent with fritz. only took him in this morning. Was examined clean bill of health a& commented what a fine example. 42kg excellent teeth gums the lot.. suggested he was a credit.. Although fritz has a Testicle that hasnt dropped vet talked me thru where how and what.. also any risk of complications..

The thing is its the first time ive ever handed fritzs lead over to anyone.. but he was so relaxed was fritz im sure they know whats going on

We walked to the surgery fritz was walking like a damn lion proud like he owned the streets lol. I was like oh shit hes going to be castrated poor bugger ((male thing)) All im concerned about is that the op goes well and no adverse effect from the procedure. but its like handed a baby over to a consultant & trusting that everything will be 100%

Vet said he'd be in sugery around 10:30am damn times dragging..

any after care tips?
just worried for the sh!t

Hi

My Lukey had a retained testicle and was castrated last year. He was fine and I'm sure your boy will be too.

Lukey had quite a big wound and was very dopey. I did find he need a bucket thing on his head when I was out of site to stop him licking and the best value and kindest one was about £7 at Pets at Home.

He was very sorry for himself and off his food for 24 hrs but his was deep in his abdomen and took a bit of finding.

I too was worried but Lukey was and is fine. The only change is to his coat but not too bad. We all worry about our fur babes. I'll look out for your post when you've heard from the vets.

Linda

He's a sh!t haha Well no news as yet I was given a patients number to call nurse directly but no responce i've called once and text.. Just hope no news is good news.. im sure had things been complicated they would have stated.. only thing they did point out was that fritz will be drunk like in appearance..

thing is if he wears a collar will that inhibit his walking in anyway?

do I just grab hius fav blanket and have him in room with me and spoil the shit or let him just relax in his usual place?

will he feel any pain anything he can have thats over the counter?

normal food? or do him some chicken and rice?
maybe i forget sometimes hes actually a dog lol

Glad he is OK.

He might appreciate a lighter diet for a day or two. I think my husband camped downstairs with Lukey the first night after his op.

Our shep had a pain injection which took him throught the first 24 hrs and was given tablets from the vets for a further 5 days pain relief. As far as I know you cannot buy things over the counter for pain relief. I believe human painkillers are not to be used for dogs but hopefully someone else will come in and let you (and me) know.

Having a 'lampshade' on will get in the way. But at night he had to because he could lick the wound and delayed it healing. We left it off when he was with us.

Hope all goes well for your lad.

Aww bless, hope he is okay.

When Hamish was done he was really feeling sorry for himself for about a week. He had his little ears back the whole time and he just moped around. We put a collar on him if he was ever left alone but not overnight or when we were around.

He didnt eat much for the first couple of days but he soon got his appetite back and after a week or so he was back to his usual jaunty self!

Horrible seeing them like that, we all felt really guilty with Hamish but it passes!

Hope Fritz recovers quickly.

he will be fine they might give you AB cover most vets do due to region where surgery is and risk of infection, if they are anything like my vets they give 3 tins of recovery food, never had one with a retained testicle so not sure on after care they may give you pain relief

Well thank you so much for the warm words all. I must say though one of the worse things was coming home with his lead. The worry is crazy but glad I shared it with you guys. Made me realise how much I miss this sh!t even after all the ups and downs. The other testicle was hard to find and vet did say he could've been in discomfort for some time.
I should've had this done a while ago, cant beat myself over it that resolves nothing. Main thing is my baby's home settling and warm. Tonight hes sleeping with me in the living room. So back in two days to check everything is a o k.. I didn't bother to purchase a collar so fingers crossed he doesn't start examining his wound. Hes also had his nails clipped and hair behind his ears clipped a little.
walked him home sugery is 15 mins away gentle walk but you know he stuck real close to my side and was no need for a leash. Then as soon as we got home straight into the living room and laid on my lap on the floor..
Fritz was sent home with a bottle of Metacam 1.5mg/ml have I paid £16 for doggy Calpol? Was also offered the vet science meal forget name but I declined made him some chicken and rice. Was told 10 - 15 mins walk lead only 3 times per day. Just the vet emphasised lead only and short duration..

So what's to be expected ref to his behaviour?
will there be significant changes

Why are the bonds with our pets so damn unique.
