First Season (I think)
I *think* Isla has come into season.
The reason that I think this is that when I arrived home last night I was greeted with cries of 'your dog is bleeding!' Apparently, my OH found himself with blood on his shirt and trousers after a cuddle with her and then there was a little puddle on the floor where she had been sitting.
I haven't seen any blood and Isla isnt noticeably different in terms of personality. I mean, she has been a bit tarty over the past few weeks but other than that, she is her normal self. There is no swelling underneath or anything like that.
So just to be on the safe side, the household is now under strict instructions not to let her out without attaching her to a lead first.
Does it sound like she really is in season? I've never had a female dog before, I've never even seen one in season! I thought it would be obvious when it happened...

Sounds like she probably is. How old is she?
Her lady bits will start to swell a bit in the next day or two I should think, then you have about 10 days when dogs will be interested in her but she won't be all that interested in them. Then you have the really hard part - not only will the dogs be interested in her, she will do everything in her power to encourage them!
Just make sure that she is exercised on lead for the next 3 weeks or so & watch out for any dogs around and you should be ok!
If you're concerned about her staining furniture etc you can buy hygiene pants from the pet stores, but make sure you have the right size or they'll rub & make her sore!

She's 6 months old now. Growing up fast!
I guess just because I havent actually seen any blood with my own eyes and she isnt particularly different in personality, and no swelling I am questioning whether she really is in season. Although she has been a bit flirty for the past few weeks, but other than that she is no different to her usual lovable cheeky self!
Honestly, I would never have known if it was not for my OH telling me what happened last night!
I will keep an eye on things over the next few days and see if there are any other symptoms.
Would it be irresponsible to take her to the park on lead or should I stick to pavement walks for the next 3 weeks?
Might have to have a look for these hygiene pants, although I imagine Isla wont enjoy wearing them! One local owner told my OH that she just buys huggies and cuts a hole for the tail lol!

Sometimes there is hardly any blood at all. Six months is quite young but cetainy "in the zone" . As Caryll says defo sign is the swelling which cant be missed!! Just be careful for the next week or so by which time she should be showing definite signs.

Very probably Jon, they try to "spread it about a bit" so to speak to try and entice the boys!!
Sometimes they can pee in the house where they wouldnt have before. Some can be a bit sickly and the runs isnt uncommon. Very often you will have an out of character chewing of something or destruction especially on the first season.

That would make sense as to why (apparently) she smelled of pee last night! I was out at uni last night so I got all these lovely stories told to me when I got home about half 10!
Also, she did have some mushy poos over the weekend and usually she is not like that - especially since I switched to part raw feeding.
