Breeding
Hi,
this is our first venture into owning a GSD (Black long hair) beautiful girl !
She is now 6 years of age and I am wondering if with this breed we have left it too long in considering breeding from her.
She has five generation pedigree and is in excellent health - we do not wish to make money out of her just ensure that we can have a puppy from her as she is so gentle & loving so that she could live on through her puppy/puppies.
Sounds corny I know however
Any advice would be greatly received
Chris

Do you have any experience of breeding? It isn't a case of just getting 2 "nice" dogs and letting them mate! Say she has a litter of ten twelve pups, do you have homes lined up for the rest if them! Is she health tested? Do you have a stud in mind? Is he health tested? Checked that they are both clear of any possible genetic defects? You only need to look at the breed rescue sites to see what I'll thought out breeding does!!! There are plenty of "nice" dogs out there already!! Personally, I would leave the breeding to the people who know what they are doing!!!

Well thank you for the nice welcome !
You ask if I have any experience of breeding - then in your reply assume I have not.
I do have experience of breeding dogs thank you.
Just not with this breed - seems I have come to the wrong forum for advice.
As you seem to have answered any questions you may have for me...yourself.
Do you actually know what you are talking about ?

Having done a lot of research recently before getting my pup, I do have an idea! I just gave you some pointers to what to look for in this breed, if you don't want to take what I say on board, that is entirely up to you!

Welcome to the forum.
The thing here is that you asked for advice, and the advice you recieved is very good advice,.. there are many things that need to be in place before a breeding takes place, and from what I reading between the lines you have not got.
No-one is trying to upset you in any way, but there are hundreds of good meaning people like you who do what you are wanting to do, and come up short, if there is a medical problem can you cope, medical fees are high, Homes have been mentioned, the last thing anyone here wants to see is puppies advertised in the press as `good homes needed` and ending up as bait dogs,.. this happens all the time.
So please look at the advice, and if you cant match the health checks, get the homes for pups, and prepare for things if they go wrong,... then please our advice is dont breed

Welcome to the forum.
I am sure your girl is very lovely but why do you want to breed from her? Is it simply so you can keep a pup yourself? If so, then I would suggest you strongly consider buying a pup from the same or similar lines.
As others have said, there are many health tests that both dog and bitch need to undergo before breeding should be considered.
Also, do you show your dog or work her? Do you have good homes lined up for any of the potential pups?
There are already too many lovely GSDs in rescue, please do not add to the problem.

is this a joke you are talking of breeding from a 6yr old novice bitch?
as she been hip/elbow scored
if you have bred before then you would no that it is too late for a bitch to have her 1st litter
