Put him in a stand and measure at the withers.
Withers = the highest point on the back on the ridge between its shoulder blades.

My boy has grown upwards but not outwards. He weighs 34kg but is roughly 33" to the shoulder. I am only 4ft 11 so we do get a few odd looks whilst walking.lol

LOL...I'm only short too at 5ft 2" and people always stare when I walk Deez, probably think how can she control that big dog so at 4ft 11" you really must attract stares

Hi Everyone - I've found this really helpful. My vet keeps telling me that my dogs need to lose some weight - the problem is GSDs here in Queensland are very small - so I was interested to read the comment about English GSDs.

I often get people ask me where we got are dogs from - they are like local celebraties the "pommy german shepherds"!! Soon people are going to be asking for their autographs when we take them for their puppycinnos.

If anyone has any tips for keeping the weight off a hyperthryroid de-sexed seven year old gsd please let me know. I've reduced her food and she has a waist - am just finding it difficult to get her down to her target weight. With the exception of the puppycinno that she has once a week she rarely has treats. She's excercised every day.

Thank you!

hi all
Spike weighs a massive 64k....... but he doesn't look overweight and he does not get fed anything but his own food.
it has taken us ages to find the right food that agrees with him and doesn't upset his stomach.
he now has 450g of Royal Cannine adult food per day, split into 2 meals with lots of veg and he gets fruit as a treat. our vet said to bulk his food out with veg as dogs get no calories out of it and he can eat as much as he likes.
yes he has to lose some weight and we are working on it. it does affect his exercise as we can't really throw a ball for too long for him as he gets out of breath quickly, so we make sure he get at least 3 long walks a week and the rest are short fast pace walks. good for us too.

64Kg, Spike is a big boy I was told by my vet not to feed as per the recommendations on the back of Diesel's food because they encourage you to over feed - which I think is terrible - they shouldn't be allowed to do that imo.

Good luck with his weight loss though, he'll be back chasing after balls in no time
