GSD Weight
Hello
I am really unsure as to what a GSD should weigh. In the vets, they have a breed weight chart and it states a GSD should be from 32-45Kg. However Diesel weighs 35.5Kg and I've been told he needs to get down to 32-34Kg. Diesel has a waist and you can feel his ribs but not see them...I am happy to get his weight off if need be, I really don't want him to suffer in anyway because of carrying extra weight that he shouldn't.
What do you think?
Cheers
xx

Hi
Last time we were at the vets, Barney weighed 45kg . I checked with them, and they said that they should range between 35kg and 45kg. I don't know what he weighs now, but this was just after he had had his foor injury, and been housebound for 5 weeks. He has lost quite a bit of weight, and now has a waist, and i can feel his ribs. He could probably loose a bit more, but he doesn't look huge now, and he is tall for a GSD.

lol I am not even going there with Georges weight, looking at diesel he is looking really well,
what does your vet think, ask him to do a height to weight comparison
I can only dream of George weighing in at 34-36kg

The vet said to get him to 32-34Kg, but to be honest I think 32Kg would make him look ill , and like Barney, Diesel is quite tall and leggy.....Diesel weighed 31Kg just before he was castrated but he was 2yrs then so I would expect him to fill out as he matured. I'll have to measure him.
I don't know whether to take him to another vet and get a 2nd opinion.....or am I worrying unnessecarily?

My opinion, for what its worth, is that Diesel is looking really well. 32kg sounds really small, especially if he is tall, you don't want him to loose any of his muscle. I can't imagine Barney as light as that, he would look really boney. I would guess Barney is about 40kg now, maybe a little less. When he was swimming in the river the other week, when he got out wet thru, he looked really skinny, and your Diesel is way lighter!
If your worried, then you should get another opinion.

Adult males from continental breeding should weigh between 30-40kg but that is dependent on height, a dog weighing 30kg would be lower end in height 60cms. Alfe's normaly weight is 35.9kg he is correct height at 65cms, Zandi is oversize in height he is 70cms and weighs 41kg.
When Alfe was ill he dropped to 32kg and you could see every bone in his body including his ribs.
English lines will weigh more and also tend to be taller than 65cms, they tend to weigh anything from 42kg upto 56kg.
Females of both type obviously will weigh a lot less.
If you can feel his bones without seeing them and he has a waist then he will be correct for his height.
