I have always kept entire males no females on the premises they arent interested in females and treat them the same as any other dog. Depends whether you use them at stud and encourage that interest or not.

Your dog will sooooooo know when a bitch is in season and so will you........as my little girl said once whilst we were all in the garden...................George has just done a white wee and I noticed he did a really silly prance round the garden, hard to explain (excuse the pun)

You will also see an increase in marking (weeing) lots of crying and howling and they will pace a lot........day and night

Age wise I am guessing around 7mths.................but could be earlier..........the lolly pop will give you a sign

Diesel was never interested in bitches, he never mounted any dog and we didn't castrate him until he was 2....

LOL @ Joanne's advice to watch the lolly pop ...it did seem to make more of an appearance from 7months though

We kept our first GSD entire and I totally agree, he will REALLY know when a bitch is on heat. Ben used to howl at the window. It was very embarrising
