Hydrotherapy
Luika has just returned from his first hydrotherapy session, and he HATED it - bless.
He screamed when they lowered him into the pool, and bless him it broke my heart to see him panic so much. However, after a minute or so he calmed down and they brought him out for a breather. 10 mins later he was back in for two mins and a short break before going in again for another 2 mins.
He looked like a drowned rat when he came out, but please God it starts to strengthen those back feet. We are back again next Monday, so I reckon we may have a fight on our hands this time!

Ahhh. How is duke now, and what was his problem?
We are going again tomorrow, if I can get Luika through the door

Hiya
Duke ruptured a ligament in his left shoulder and had to have a prosthetic ligament. We went to hydrotherapy to build up the muscles in his shoulder.
Unfortunately I lost him to Canine Lupus on Nov 30th 2006.

I am sorry to hear that Marilyn. Canine Lupus is not something you hear of very much at all.
I am still researching cow hocks, to discover if there is anything else that can be done other than hydrotherapy, and free running. I just do not want to leave any stone uncovered.
I must admit I am dreading today. It wont take Luika long, to know where he is going!!!

It may take a couple of months to completely relax but it will be worth it. Duke threw a kingsize tantrum first time he went but eventually we could not get him out of the pool. Funnily enough, they all took to the water walker virtually straight away

We have decided after Monday's session, not to return to that particular place. Luika was initially given 2 mins in the pool, followed by a good break, then another 2 mins, followed by another break and 2 mins before we left. At 6 months old, we were lead to believe that these sessions would gradually build over the forthcoming weeks.
However, he was left for 5 mins and was desperately out of breath and getting very distressed. Despite our concerns, no effort was made to get him out of the pool. We then insisted, and when Luika had calmed down and got his breath back, we were told he should manage 10 mins!!!
We have now found an orthopedic vet to has a hydrotherapy treadmill, so we have made an appointment for Saturday. It's very expensive treatment, but at least we know Luika will be in safe hands.
