It just goes to show, the incompetence of some so-called vets. When you do find a good one you really see the difference. Our current vets don't pull any punches, they tell you how it is. When my Zac first became ill, I rang the local vets at 11.30 at night, as I was so worried. He told me he had a stomach upset, and told me to give him paracetamol and Gaviscon. When i took him to our vets the following morning, she took one look at him, told me he was bleeding internally, that he had cancer, and that he wouldn't survive! She was quite right, and we lost him 9 weeks later, after we had tried everything possible.

We always prayed that we could be there with Zak at the end, if he were put to sleep. Our first dog Ben died at the vets having had gastric torsion, our second had an exploratory operation and was found to have cancer of the spleen, so we let him go under the anesthetic and Zak was our first GSD that we could be with. He was fine one day and collapsed the next, without warning.

He did not deserve to be treated in this way, but he was unconscious within about 15 mins of arriving at the vets. He laid his head in my lap and we were with him to the end. That bitch of a woman however, tried everything possible to persuade us to leave. The male vet was just as bad.

We have tried to put it behind us now and remember Zak as the proud, beautiful and handsome dog he was, but occasionally those awful memory's surface and the pain returns.

How could they even ask you to leave? You had every right to be with your baby at the end. I am glad you stuck to your guns, and weren't intimidated by them. A good vet is worth their weight in gold.

This is where we get to the part where i want to complain. I got to the vets, and was seen fairly quickly. There were 4 people in the room. and the vet was sat behind his desk, asking me questions, not getting up or anything. He eventually examined Kai, took his temp etc...and diagnosed him with distemper, at which i burst into tears. Nobody comforted me, just stared at me..the vet backed away from kai when he went near him and i was ushered out of the room like a leper. He said i could either take Kai back to the home or keep him either way he will probably die. I called my OH hysterical, made him come out of work and together we took Kai to the Home. I sobbed in there and the manager got their vet to look at Kai, and they said KC. In my paranoia i asked for another vet to come and look, and they too said KC. I got some antibiotics and a a few weeks on Kai is right as rain!
I agree with what has already been said, yes I would complain to the owner of the practice, this behavior from the "locam vet" is appalling...........you should of seen me when George was diagnosed with HD lol I so know hysterical................

The veterinary practice has to follow a complaints procedure...........It will make you feel better

Sorry for the long and rambling post, but it's been playing on my mind. The vet was rude, inconsiderate, when i was trying to speak through my tears he just cupped his hand round his ear and said "WHAT?"...at the end of the day i could have lost Kai if i believed him, and as he is supposed to be a vet i could hve easily done so. Do i have grounds for complaint?
lol I have done longer rants.............and yes you have grounds for complaint

Oh Petnanny I can't imagine the pain you went through and i'm so sorry for your loss...and for those who have lost animals in similar circumstances. As professionals vets tend to be trusted and my experience has shaken the way i feel about them. I could have lost my boy that day after only having rescued him less than a week before. It's so powerful how animals can touch our hearts in such a quick and profound way. I will be writing a letter, but is there like a watchdog or people who regulate vetinary services to complain to?

My thoughts are with you all x

Try this link for vet complaints

RCVS Online / Veterinary Surgeons / Complaints procedure

Everyone MUST make a complaint if they encounter a bad vet otherwise how will we get rid if them?

Yes, best of luck. I should have complained at the time, but will NEVER see that particular vet again.

Our regular vet is amazing. He is also fantastic with GSD's and the other day the surgery was full to bursting, and I popped in to collect a letter from him to another vet who offers treadmill/hydrotherapy. He thought I was being silly paying £60.00 for a consultation and £40.00 thereafter, and suggested I look around from another hydrotherapy pool. I was discussing Luika for over 30 mins and he charged nothing.

We have now found an EXCELLENT pool and Luika was so much better having someone in the water with him. I am over the moom to have found this pool, and it shows that there are still some very good vets around
