Yes down is a more positive command for a down and I agree off for jumping up if the dog is more sensitive to the down command I use a two syllable command
lie down

I use the same as everyone, taught it in training class. "Down" to lay down, "Sit" to sit and "Off" to get him to stop jumping up on anything/anyone, all very different commands and you should only ever have to say them once according to my trainer. Granted at first it may take a while for them to do the command if you're used to repeating yourself, but they do hear it the first time. I usually give my pup a nudge if he takes his time, such as "Down" and if I get no response I'll follow it up with anything really such as "Ahem." or "Excuse me" etc. Just some good tips I've gotten from training so far.
I don't think I use any two syllable commands at all.

I do that with the 'ahem' and 'oi' too if they're slow with it, they seem to know

You see some owners repeating sit sit sit sit sit to their dog; and it's not sitting! No point repeating if the dog's attention isn't on you and it's not stella with the command

Mine know 'right then' means we're going out for a walk. 'In for a swim' means they can go in the water out on a walk... 'this way' for direction change... 'Wait!' and 'leave it!' are vital ones!

Hahaha, they are two that I use a lot!

All my commands are one syllable. I was once told that a dog only really hears the first syllable of any word, so using two is a waste of time. The "excuse me" is only to get the attention back, it isn't a command in itself.

Since doing quite allot of moves "trick" training I tend to use allot of different words so I have to use two syllable and short phrases its amazing just what the dogs do understand
