A Cry For Help!
Hey folks, i have ben a 13 week puppy.
Im seriously struggling to house train him, ive tried mats, walks, praise, nothing seems to work,
after a walk or being let out in the garden, he will come in and do the toilet.
Im losing my mind cleaning up pee and poo.
He just tears the puppy pads when they get put down, so ive stopped using them.
Please Help!

Hi welcome to the forum
As well as this thread, you may be able to pick up more information from other threads about this, by useing the search at the top of the page.
There are many reason why the pup might be doing this,..it could be the case that he is doing it where he did it last time,..they will smell that area, and think it is the right place to do it,... you will need to clean that area particuly well.
Try to put the pup outside often, try to antisipate him first,... dont just put him out and shut the door, but walk the garden with him,..if he holds on till he gets inside then pick him up and carry him out,.. do not scold him at all,.. but praise him if he finishes off outside
It has been a long time since I had a pup, but I never liked paper on the floor,..at least during the day, I found that it seemed to encouage them to use that area.
Where does he stay at night?,.. not many pups will soil thier own bed, this can work for you, if you can use a small area for the pup at night,.. a cage is perfect, rather than mess his bed, he is more likely to wine to be somewhere else

Personally I dont think pads or paper are a good idea, they just confuse the pup.
In my experience the almost sure fire way to house train is keeping them in a confined space when alone. Dogs do not like to lie in their own waste so they learn to hold it.
That said you also need to train during the day. It can be a slow process with some pups others pick it up straight away. You have to set the puppy up to succeed. Take them out regularly even if you dont think they really want a wee, chances are eventually the two will conincide. If the pup does a pee/poo outside then praise them massively or treat them. (I should tell you that when training my Max this way he was so excited to get his choccy drop for being a good boy he used to run in the house to get whilst still peeing!!)
You have to take the pup out in the morning before even you get to go. We have all done the standing in the garden with our legs drossed desperately praying for little puppy to hurry up.
Good luck you will get there in the end he's still a baby.

Hi we have just gone through that stage with scout our puppy we did not use any pads or paper we just kept taking him out the garden every half hour and giving loads of praise when he did the business. But he still had the odd accident in the house so straight away take him in the garden and like Stuart said give the area in the house a good clean.Keep at it and it will soon he will accept that he has to go outside

As above. Take him out every half hour or so, with massive praise when he actually does his business outside, but no reaction at all if he does it inside. Try to clear up his mistakes without him seeing, as he'll think it's part of a game. Also, clean the area with an amonia-free cleaner as the amonia seems to attract them!
He's still VERY young, so I'd just soldier on - he'll get there soon enough.

He is still a baby dont expect miracles.
As others have said dont just put him out go with him into the garden, praise when he does it there use key words ie weewee as he is doing eventualy he will learn to associate the word with the action
Dont tell him off when he does it inside just remove him from the area and clean up out of sight of him
Use biological washing powder in warm water to clean any accidents up.
It takes time and encouragement

I found with Zen that the puppy crate method worked the best, yeah there were still odd accidents but only for about two weeks and since then he has never messed in the house.
Perserve, it will be worth it in the end.

All of the above advice, is really the best things you can do.
As for pads, we did buy some, but honestly, it's very difficult to make it work. Plus our pup likes to eat them, so we only use them to soak up accidents. They are very good for that and better than paper.
For what it's worth, with our 11 week old puppy, we simply take her out before/after meals and water, after playing and if we notice her sniffing about and walking in circles. Lots and lots of praise outside but only if the pup goes. So much so, she will now whine near the door to go out.
Also, if you can catch a pup mid-way through, try to pick the pup up and take it outside. Many times, you can catch them before they finish and they will finish outside. Lots of praise again of course. Never tell a pup off if you don't see it do it. It won't understand what the "no" was for.
We have virtually no accidents at all now, but pups cannot hold water for long and you will still get accidents. That's just a puppy. It shouldn't make a mess in it's bed/crate, unless if REALLY has too.
It's far from easy sailing, we still get up several times in the night to take her out. Between 2 and 6 hours roughly. But she does wake up and whine to tell us. It's not very nice standing outside in -10 weather, but it won't be forever.
It's certainly no fun picking up poop, it's just one of those things. Given time your pup will become a wonderful adult and all this, will just be silly memories.

All good advice !
The only way, I have found, is the walk round the patio/garden every half hour or so. After a few days, I would leave back door open, but secure a small pation area - and follow pup out praising highly when does something.
I totally agree re pads and paper - no good for pups.... just lots of fun to rip up Pads are really for older dogs needing some help
Also agree - very young so don't expect overnight success just persevere.
