Lightbulb Trainer .... Behaviourist?

Where would you expect a Dog Behaviourist to take over from a Dog Trainer? (Interesting question methinks - hopefully)!

Have you ever needed to contact a Dog Behaviourist? What made you choose a Behaviourist rather than a Trainer?

I would say if and when there was a serious and possibly aggressive (or potentially aggressive) behaviour problem - which hopefully wouldn't happen with early start on training.

The one deals with the behaviour of the way the dogs thinks/been brought up, or with habits that are ingrained,..the other deals with teaching a dog something new

...and one is far more expensive than the other,..lol

I use a behaviourist (or canine counsellor as they are also called as well) and its the first time Ive seen a big improvement in Cora, I had previously gone to training groups and had 1-1 training but all we seemed to get were quick fixes and Cora being a typical intelligent shep learnt to side step what we had been taught. So I contacted the lady who I go to now, who was highly recomended to me and slowly but surely we are getting there now and I have a much happier dog, and walking is getting more fun and less stressful

I'd say that a behaviourist is like a psychologist whilst a trainer is like a teacher (but generally teaches the owners, not the dogs!)

A behaviourist would step in when a trainer couldn't correct an issue, or if a dog had an underlying issue from past neglect or sommat.

You have to be a good dog trainer first and foremost as i am dog trainer/behaviouist i like to have a wide scope on all aspects of dog behaviour this grains down to lots of aspects which include - nuturing/upbringing/genetic background if possible!/breed chararistics/handling/training/body language/social/sexual/socialization/history of canines/training techniques to suit all breed types/knowledge of all breed types the list goes on imo
