We're getting on amazingly. Sam is very close to walking to heel on command the majority of the time. first and last 10 minutes are the most exciting - other thsan that - no tension on the lead and him perfectly beside me.
With the long line I put my OH 100yds up the straight track and had him call Sam, so none of us was holding his long line. We turned it into a game so he was running between us, getting fussed and also getting a good run- perfect for teaching him his recall
Depending on the situation, I either keep him walking or get him to sit and TRY to keep his attention on me, when another dog goes past. Yesterday a woman with 2 collies and a beagle was coming down a path that joined our one and then we were all going the same way down the path. They ignored their recall and ran towards us. My OH stood in front not letting them past as Sam was straining on the leash, jumping up and away from me on his hind legs. Half-Whining - Half-Howling. Finally the woman got them going away, but we were trying to go the same way and Sam wouldn't settle and I couldn't get his attention back to me. We ended up going a different way!!!
He jumps, strains, howls and whines.
When other dogs have previously approached him, he has raised his hackles and growled. I need to get him socialised BUT don't know anyone with dogs (that he doesnt know) and can't find any classes at all here for obedience or anything.
Is there anything I can do when in this situation? If we walk past a dog in the opposite direction I can keep him focused enough to keep walking without stopping. He doesn't have a fave toy or anything that would keep his attention.
