Kaz and Harvey is on a distinguished road
Need some advice please

I want to start recall training with Harvey
I have bought a whistle and a 50ft lead, we had him out with the lead and he did come back to us but then started to run round us, I think he just wanted to play!!

So the question I pose is......Where do I start?.....Help me please....

Start small, maybe let him go 10 paces then recall gradually increasing the distance . You have to make yourself more interesting that his surroundings- lots of praise in a high excited voice and something really tasty as reward(Zeus loves roast chicken but he ONLY gets it on recall) When I first started with Zeus if he didn't cone back I turned by back on him, shouted bye then and walked away- we all know our sheps love company and he always came running to me. If he's not returning you can shout what you like but always in the same High tone.... He doesn't know ur shouting " I'm gonna bloody kill ya when I get hold if u"!!!! Lol start with putting his lead on each time he returns to u then walk couPle of paces and release him- that way he won't associate returning to u as something bad

This what I do when Bonnie doesn't listen to me, and not just for recall... anything she doesnt listen to I turn my back on her as she hates it always like to show off to mum

I'd also take it in small steps at 1st and gradually build on it good luck x

I started by whistling Diesel for his food, so he began to associate the whistle with good things.

There is not a lot to add to the help already given really except that when you think you have the recall to the standard you want on the long lead,..your next step is off the lead in an enclosed space, somewhere like a tennise court,.. just in case

I also use a whistle for recall at a longer distance, remember what Jon said about the high pitch voice,. well a whistle is also high pitched and dogs respond well to it

Personally i would not let the long lead become to much of a training aid, its perfect for for some training. Sit stays for example if you use the stake in the ground which they would be tethered to and then you can give a quick check when they are about to break. If you have the opputunity to use a large secure area off lead then you might get better results with recall the younger the dog better, no matter how long the lead once off it for the first time FREEDOM.

Just my opinion

Sorry Stuart i hadn't realised you had already suggested off lead

Thanks everyone for the sound advice, we dont have a enclosed space near by, but am trying to get him used to the whistle first in the house, then try it outside
